Blumhouse Founder Sets The Record Straight On Whether Studio Is For Sale

Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum has officially shut down persistent rumors that the iconic horror studio is up for sale.

Speaking with Variety, Blum addressed the speculation directly. When asked whether Blumhouse is currently for sale, he definitively responded: “Blumhouse is not for sale.” Blum dismissed the notion “with great certainty,” adding that: “The biggest thing we’ve ever done in 15 years is merged with Atomic Monster. That’s been our biggest transaction, and I’m happy with how it’s going.

The 2024 merger between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, James Wan’s production label, brought together two of the most successful names in contemporary horror. According to Blum, the partnership has positioned the company better than ever in a compeтιтive marketplace, as he said: “Atomic Monster is incredibly well suited to the IP event business that really represents modern studio horror.

Blum also pointed to Atomic Monster’s impressive track record as evidence, noting: “The average Atomic Monster movie has made about $260 million worldwide. That success, combined with Blumhouse’s legacy and focus, suggests the studio is leaning into growth, rather than sales pitches. The merger has already borne creative fruit, with projects that combine the strengths of both brands.

2024’s supernatural horror Night Swim was the first movie to be released following Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s merger on January 2, 2024. Despite negative reviews, the film grossed over $54 million on a $15 million budget. However, there are plenty of others in development under the merger, including The Mummy, SOULM8TE, Other Mommy, and the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ by Daylight adaptation.

Furthermore, the Atomic Monster and Blumhouse merger also brought James Wan back to having creative control over the Saw franchise, following Blumhouse acquiring the rights. As a result, Blum also announced that Wan will be key to reinventing Saw with future movies. Therefore, we can expect to see more Saw content under the merger in the coming years, too.

Despite the merger, both horror movie companies continue to operate in their own capacity, maintaining creative autonomy and personal brand idenтιтy. As such, тιтles like Black Phone 2, No Me Sigas (Blumhouse’s first Spanish original film), and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 are just some of the Blumhouse productions where neither Wan nor Atomic Monster is said to be attached.

Blumhouse has plenty of upcoming projects on the horizon — 13 confirmed, although some are unnamed — and with large IPs such as Five Nights at Freddy’s and rebooted classics like The Mummy, it doesn’t look like the studio will need to sell any time soon. As speculation continues to swirl, Blum’s message is evidently clear: Blumhouse isn’t going anywhere, except forward.
