Prime Video’s New Rom-Com With Riverdale Star Becomes Instant Streaming Hit

Maintenance Required‘s engines are running at full throttle and racing straight to streaming success. Prime Video’s new romantic comedy is led by Madelaine Petsch, who is best known for playing Cheryl Blossom on The CW/Netflix series Riverdale from 2017 to 2023.

Now, a day after its release, Maintenance Required ranks third on Prime Video’s Top 10 movies in the United States for today, October 9. It ranks below another Prime Video original, Play Dirty, No Time to Die, and above A Working Man, Diablo, Queen of Bones, Casino Royale, Tremors, Knight and Day, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Prime Video’s new rom-com stars Madelaine Petsch as the strong-willed owner of an all-female mechanic shop who must reconsider her plans when a flashy corporate rival sets up shop across the street. Looking for support, she confides in an anonymous online friend, unaware that he is the very compeтιтor putting her business at risk.

The cast also includes Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life, Bad Boys: Ride or Die) as the male lead, Madison Bailey (Outer Banks), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding, The Mandalorian), Inanna Sarkis, Matteo Lane, Rob Rausch (Love Island USA, The Traitors), and comedian Jim Gaffigan. It’s directed by Lacey Uhlemeyer, who co-wrote the script with Roo Berry and Erin Falconer.

In ScreenRant‘s Maintenance Required review, Gregory Nussen rates the film a three out of 10 and writes, “Prime Video’s sputtery romantic comedy cannot live up to its source material,” referring to the 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie. “Maintenance Required fails to capture the magic of its predecessors, despite charming leads and a talented female-led cast.”

MAINTENANCE_REQUIRED_5-1

On Rotten Tomatoes, Maintenance Required only has eight reviews from critics and fewer than 50 ratings from users, which aren’t enough to qualify for scores. Overall, the reviews are deeply divided – with some praising its charm, performances, and soundtrack – but others criticizing it as clichéd, soulless, and frustrating.

Audience reactions are also deeply divided – with some praising its fun, lighthearted romance and chemistry, while others criticize its awkward dialogue, weak characters, predictable plot, and forced attempts at female empowerment. While Maintenance Required has become an instant hit on Prime Video, that much is undeniable, the quality of the rom-com itself is very much a contentious topic.
