Blumhouse Creator Explains How The Saw Franchise Will Be Reinvented

Blumhouse’s creator Jason Blum has revealed how the Saw franchise will be reinvented under the studio’s banner, after acquiring the rights.

In a new interview with Variety, Blum explained his philosophy for reviving such a well-established property. He praised the producers of Saw for making 10 movies in the franchise so far, acknowledging how hard a feat that is. However, Blum explained that he wants to get Saw‘s original director, James Wan, involved again. Check out Blum’s comments below:

It’s really hard to make 10 movies in a franchise — I don’t take that away from the original series’ producers. And I’m grateful to them for allowing us to continue. My creative outlook is what I always preach: Get the people who made the magic in the first place more involved. James Wan [the original director] will be hugely involved. That’s how we’re going to reinvent it.

While Blum didn’t reveal plot or timeline specifics, his comments suggest that Saw‘s reinvention under Blumhouse won’t be a reboot in the traditional sense, but rather a tonal or structural reset that honors the first film by Wan. Blumhouse has a proven track record of revitalizing legacy horror IPs, including things like 2018’s Halloween and 2020’s The Invisible Man.

The Saw franchise was created by Australian filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell in 2004 and quickly became a box office phenomenon, kickstarting a horror legacy. The beloved series has collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making Saw one of the highest-grossing horror film franchises of all time. The latest installment, Saw X, was released in 2023 to positive reviews.

Lionsgate confirmed Saw XI in December 2023 as a direct sequel with a release date set for September 2025. Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D, Saw X) was set to direct, with longtime writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan returning. However, the film was canceled, and in June 2025, Blumhouse Productions bought Twisted Pictures’ stake in the franchise.

Despite being the original co-creator and director of 2004’s Saw, Wan has not returned to direct any subsequent entries in the series. That being said, Wan has remained credited as an executive producer on the Saw movies and has also produced plenty of other major horror тιтles over the years, including movies in The Conjuring series.

With Blumhouse’s creator stating that Wan will take on a “hugely involved” role in the reinvention of Saw, Wan will apparently help guide the next chapter of the series in a way he hasn’t really done since Saw III. This could mean that Wan may even return as writer, bringing the “magic” back to the long-running franchise.

Bringing back original creatives like Wan may be exactly what Saw needs to evolve under Blumhouse while staying true to its roots. As the studio begins preparing for the next chapter, longtime Saw fans can likely expect a more focused, character-driven return to form, echoing the first movie, with its original creator leading the way.
