A Spider-Man & Superman Crossover Movie Just Got Way More Likely Than I Ever Dared To Hope

The current setup for Marvel and DC has made a Spider-Man and Superman crossover movie look more possible than I have ever dared to hope it could be before. Understandably, when it comes to hero team ups, Superman and Spider-Man are some of the last figures people expect to see alongside each other on-screen, since they exist in different franchises.

However, this hasn’t stopped them from interacting over the course of their respective comic histories, with the Man of Steel and web-slinging superhero having had their own shared comic story previously. Now, the stars appear to be aligning to make a crossover film seem more viable than ever before, and even the mere prospect is staggeringly exciting.

Superman & Spider-Man’s Comic Crossover Aligns Well With James Gunn’s Movie Comments

The comic world has recently been rocked by the announcement of some new DC & Marvel crossovers, with the two franchises re-releasing some of the classic comics featuring the duo of two of the most beloved comic characters in history, and promising new upcoming comic stories featuring the pair as we move into 2026.

Interestingly, this news comes around the same time as James Gunn’s recent comments about whether a movie crossover would be possible for the two тιтans of the superhero genre. In a June 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn responded to a query about a Spider-Man and Superman crossover movie and its potential inevitability by stating:

We’ve talked about it a billion times. That could easily happen, but simultaneous to that, I think it would be interesting. But I also think people are a little over it. I think people wanna see good stories with their superheroes and that’s what matters. And they wanna see different types of stories with their superheroes. And people love superheroes. That’s obvious, but they need more variety, and they need just more quality storytelling. And just having Spider-Man and Superman team up isn’t gonna do it if it’s s**t. So it’s gotta come from a real place, and it’s really hard to make that work.

I did Superman because I loved the character. And I was excited about writing that movie. If I were to write a Superman-versus-Spider-Man movie, is it a concept I’m gonna be like, “Oh, yeah, this could be a great film”? Or am I doing it because “Oh, yeah, people want to see Superman and Spider-Man team up”? For me, it would have to be — if we ever did that, it would have to be under someone who thought it was gonna be awesome and wasn’t just a cash grab, because I’m just not into that.

Ultimately, these comments certainly suggest that a Superman and Spider-Man crossover movie would be something that the current DC Studios co-CEO would be more than happy to greenlight were the right creator and script to appear for the project in question.

With a new age of co-operation for Spider-Man and Superman crossover stories already established, it seems things are set up more than ever for this concept to be capitalized on – or at least discussed as a possibility that would garner immense interest on both sides of the Marvel and DC fan spectrum, which is by itself fascinating to note.

A Superman & Spider-Man Crossover Movie Would Likely Have To Follow One Rule

Though David Corenswet’s Superman and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man have proved themselves to be hits with movie audiences, it’s likely that a crossover film would at least currently have to follow a different trajectory, and take a road less traveled metaphorically – as the arguably ideal format for a crossover movie of this type would be making it an animated release.

An animated Superman and Spider-Man movie would be more viable not just in terms of budget and in allowing the DCU and MCU timeline to remain clearly separate, but also potentially in terms of replicating the Superman and Spider-Man crossover comics, building on the wild and wonderful history of the heroes from different franchises coming together.

While this might be less of a spectacle to some, the idea of seeing the kind of story that would seem outright impossible had Spider-Man and Superman not already crossed paths, be set to cross paths again in the comics, and be something the DC Studios co-CEO has openly considered is surreal in the best and most exciting way.
