Netflix’s Extraction 3 Gets Filming & Release Update From Franchise Director

Extraction 3 director Sam Hargrave provides a new update regarding the Chris Hemsworth sequel, finally revealing when the film is expected to start shooting. After debuting as Tyler Rake in 2020’s Extraction, the Thor star reprised his role for Netflix’s 2023 sequel. Extraction 3 was subsequently confirmed, but a firm timeline for the movie has been hard to come by.

Now, Hargrave tells Collider that the plan is to start shooting Extraction 3 at some point next year. It’s not exactly clear when in 2026, however, since the director says that Hemsworth’s involvement in the MCU and the upcoming Avengers film complicates scheduling. Check out Hargrave’s comment below:

“The plan is to turn over in 2026. […] We’ll roll cameras in 2026, we’ll see how it goes. A lot of it’s based on his schedule with Avengers, which has a lot of moving parts, but that’s the plan, to shoot in ’26 and I’m ᴀssuming the release will be some time in 2027. But, of course, I can neither officially confirm or deny these dates! [laughs]”

Should filming get underway next year, a 2027 release is likely, but specifically when in 2027 the film could arrive depends on when in 2026 it starts filming. If cameras don’t start rolling until late 2026, for example, the film likely won’t arrive until late 2027.

It was confirmed that Hemsworth would reprise his role as Thor in the Avengers: Doomsday cast back in the spring. This return as the superhero marks his latest MCU outing since Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022.

Filming on Doomsday wrapped last month, but the Marvel production model typically involves a lot of reshoots, so it’s possible Hemsworth will be back in the fold early next year shooting more material as Thor. The “moving parts” Hargrave is referring to probably include potential reshoot time, as well as Hemsworth’s mandated promotion of the film ahead of its December 18 release.

Hargrave’s update follows a comment from Golshifteh Farahani, who plays Nik, who seemingly hinted that the third film could be eyeing an April 2026 filming start. The actor didn’t paint the window as a certainty, however, and Hargrave’s comment reinforces the notion that the situation is still somewhat fluid.

This new development regarding the film is sure to come as good news for many given the positive response to Extraction 2. The sequel didn’t quite match the original in terms of Netflix viewership, but it did fare better critically, sporting an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 84% Popcornmeter.

No plot synopsis or logline has been revealed for the threequel just yet, but the Extraction 2 ending does provide hints about where the story could go next, which includes a role for newcomer Idris Elba. With filming expected to start next year, more about Extraction 3 could be revealed in the coming months.
