The new trailer for Star Wars’ next movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, shows that Grogu is no longer with the Jedi, as he instead continues to travel around with his adoptive father, Din Djarin. Grogu famously left Mando in The Mandalorian season 2 finale to go with Luke Skywalker, who would train him in the ways of the Jedi.

This was expected to happen throughout The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2, as Din Djarin’s entire journey in the latter was dedicated to reuniting Grogu with the Jedi, which Mando considered to be “his own kind.” Although that mission was accomplished, Grogu does not stay with Luke Skywalker in the long run, and this is why.

Grogu’s Heart Was Never In His Jedi Training

In The Book of Boba Fett, the spin-off TV show that takes place between The Mandalorian seasons 2 and 3, we get a glimpse into Grogu’s Jedi training with Luke Skywalker on the planet Ossus. We quickly learn, however, that Grogu isn’t as invested in his training as he’s supposed to be.

Grogu is undoubtedly powerful and capable, and he learns quickly – especially under Luke’s tutelage – but Luke shares with Ahsoka Tano, who briefly visits during Grogu’s training, that he’s concerned about the fact that Grogu’s heart isn’t in his training. This leads to Luke presenting Grogu with a choice: complete his Jedi training, or return to his Mandalorian father.

Luke uses Yoda’s old lightsaber to represent Grogu’s potential Jedi future, while he offers beskar chainmail delivered by Din Djarin to represent a potential Mandalorian future. Grogu then makes his choice, which sees him reuniting with Din Djarin on Tatooine in the midst of the Battle for Mos Espa – and thus ending his Jedi training.

Grogu Is A Mandalorian Now, Not A Jedi

Grogu’s choice makes plenty of sense beyond just missing his Mandalorian father. Grogu is severely traumatized by the events of Order 66, as any Jedi survivor would be, and that undoubtedly makes the life of a Jedi even less appealing to him. It also requires an intense discipline that our lovingly mischievous Grogu likely isn’t keen on.

Now Grogu is officially Din Djarin’s Mandalorian apprentice, but this won’t be easy for him, either. The Mandalorian Way requires just as much discipline, as evidenced by Din Djarin and his unwavering dedication to his Creed. Grogu will still be powerful, and he will still use the Force, just not in the ways of the Jedi.

Grogu, however, may not be done with his Jedi training forever. There have been Mandalorian Jedi before, including the creator of the Darksaber himself, Tarre Vizsla. Most recently, Sabine Wren was seen training as a Mandalorian Jedi in Ahsoka season 1.

While it’s unlikely to be the case that Grogu becomes a true Mandalorian Jedi in The Mandalorian and Grogu, it’s not impossible, especially not for his future beyond the movie – even if he’s focused on his Mandalorian training for now.
