The official trailer for Playdate showcases its star-studded cast. The movie, which was directed by Luke Greenfield (Let’s Be Cops), features Kevin James and Reacher star Alan Ritchson as two fathers on a playdate who go on a high-octane adventure with their sons when they get mixed up in a plot involving a team of mercenaries.
Prime Video has now unveiled the official trailer for Playdate, building anticipation for hte movie ahead of its debut on the streamer on November 12.
It opens with a comic moment where James’ character Brian is struggling to relate to his new stepson, Lucas (Benjamin Pajak), when he feels outmatched by Ritchson’s Jeff expertly throwing a football back and forth with his son, CJ (Banks Pierce), who roughhouse in an unusually aggressive manner.
Jeff and CJ both quickly show their softer sides by immediately wanting to be best friends with Brian and Lucas (though Brian is somewhat put off by this).
However, after CJ drops the bombshell that Jeff isn’t actually his dad, the two pairs are forced to spend a much longer time together than anticipated when mercenaries descend on the pizza parlor where they have been hanging out. Brian is now a target because the mercenaries think he knows whatever secrets Jeff has been hiding.
Jeff reveals that CJ is the real target and what ensues is a grand adventure where Jeff drives a minivan like a getaway car and generally wreaks havoc in a series of clips from action scenes that include Ritchson lifting up one of the kids so he can pull off an aerial kick and the foursome walking away from an explosion.
The trailer also showcases Scrubs‘ Sarah Chalke as Lucas’ mother Emily and Andor‘s Alan Tudyk as the mysterious villain Simon Maddox. See the full video below:
This trailer for Playdate reveals that the Alan Ritchson movie sees the star working in a very different mode than he does in Prime Video’s Reacher. While he still channels that character’s intensity and skill as an action hero, Jeff is a much more comedy-forward character than Jack Reacher, imbuing him with a joie de vivre that makes him even more unpredictable.
The Prime Video original movie uses this unexpected performance to drive a lot of its comedy, but the Playdate trailer reveals that Kevin James still has plenty of opportunities to play comedic scenes in spite of the fact that his character is primarily the straight man over the course of the story.
