The Conjuring: Last Rites Is The Third Horror Movie Ever To Pᴀss Huge Box Office Milestone

The Conjuring: Last Rites has hit a mᴀssive global box office milestone that is nearly unheard of. The new movie is the ninth installment in the Conjuring franchise, which also includes three Annabelle movies and two Nun movies. It is being billed as the last outing for demonologists Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga).

Potentially off the back of that promise, the movie has brought an unprecedented number of viewers to theaters, quickly becoming the highest-grossing installment. Warner Bros. has now shared that, as of Sunday morning, The Conjuring: Last Rites is expected to end its fifth weekend in theaters with a cumulative global box office total of $458.2 million.

This total, which comprises $167.8 million from domestic theaters and an additional $290.4 million from international markets, makes 2025’s The Conjuring: Last Rites only the third horror movie in history to pᴀss the $450 million global milestone (not adjusted for inflation).

The Other Top Horror Movies Have Something In Common With The Conjuring 4

The other two movies that have already surpᴀssed the $450 million milestone are 2017’s It ($704.1 million) and its 2019 sequel It: Chapter 2 ($473.1 million). The pair of Stephen King adaptations have one important thing in common with The Conjuring: Last Rites. This is the fact that all three тιтles are Warner Bros. productions.

Warner Bros. has put out a number of mᴀssively lucrative horror тιтles in the past decade, including three of the other тιтles in the Top 10 horror movies of all time. In addition to the two It movies and Last Rites, that six-film roster includes 2025’s Sinners (No. 5), 2018’s The Nun (No. 6), and 2016’s The Conjuring 2 (No. 10).

That list is primarily made up of Conjuring movies, so it is obvious that the success of the original 2013 installment (which is No. 11 on the list) is directly responsible for a great number of these all-time hits. However, in all likelihood, it is also indirectly responsible for the other Warner Bros. тιтles in the Top 10.

While those movies occupy different spheres because Sinners is an original movie and both It movies belong to a pre-existing IP, the success of The Conjuring seems to have encouraged Warner Bros. to continue putting their weight behind major horror releases with sizable budgets, which have quite consistently found ways to connect with global audiences.

Therefore, the fact that The Conjuring: Last Rites has become one of the few movies to ever pᴀss a historic box office milestone (one that also makes the new movie the 11th highest-grossing release of the year, in any genre) is a fitting victory lap for the franchise more than a decade after it began.
