1989’s Batman is set to get a new sequel in 2025, and it’s currently only 3 weeks away from release. Batman’s movie history is one of the strongest in the superhero genre, and while the 1989 Batman wasn’t the first film in this roster, it is arguably the DC release that kicked off Batman’s rise to becoming a тιтan of cinema.
Given the 1989 Batman‘s reputation holds up to this day, it’s perhaps no surprise there have been newer efforts to explore its world and expand the series. The most recent of these is set to debut later this October, with the upcoming DC release delving further into this universe decades after the movie first debuted.
2025’s Batman: Revolution Follows On From The 1989 Batman Movie
35 years after the release of the original 1989 Batman, the film got another direct sequel in the form of Batman: Resurrection, which explored the direct aftermath of the movie through the seeming revival of the Joker after his on-screen death – expanding the universe without having to delve into the more controversially received later films.
Now, 2025 follows up on Batman once again, this time through the story of Batman: Revolution. Batman: Revolution is due to release on October 21, 2025, and focuses on the rise of the Riddler – seemingly moving further away from connecting to Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, since it appears to firmly establish its own separate version of the Riddler.
The blurb for Batman: Revolution also promises that the Riddler and Batman “will uncover hidden secrets about Gotham’s past that will have dire consequences for the city’s future,” suggesting other antagonists and wider plotlines about Gotham and its history could be in the works for the story.
Why Batman: Revolution Continues The Original Batman Movie Series Almost 40 Years Later
Despite the original Batman being close to its 40th birthday, interest and fan investment in the movie hasn’t waned.
As such, it makes sense that there would be some efforts to follow up on parts of its world and story – especially when said follow-ups are able to proverbially rewrite history by providing a version of later events that can prove less critically contentious than the third and fourth films in the series.
Batman already had a follow-up comic series, and the creation of Batman: Resurrection and Batman: Revolution make sense in the same way. Ultimately, Batman: Revolution being a tie-in book sequel means it can serve as a follow-up where a movie perhaps would struggle, since things like recastings or major film budgets aren’t needed for a book sequel.
With much of the wider world of the original Batman movie series having been relatively unexplored – as evidenced with Batman: Resurrection featuring villains who didn’t appear in the movies – Batman: Revolution offers an interesting chance to flesh out this world further decades later, and revamp the Riddler’s story in this world at the same time.
