First-look images offer a closer look at the upcoming action-comedy movie Playdate. The film, which was directed by Luke Greenfield (Let’s Be Cops, The Girl Next Door), stars The King of Queens‘ Kevin James and Reacher star Alan Ritchson as stay-at-home dads Brian and Jeff, who find themselves on the run from mercenaries with their kids along for the ride.
Their sons Lucas and CJ are played by Benjamin Pajak (The Life of Chuck) and Banks Pierce (The Chosen Adventures) respectively. The ensemble cast of the movie also includes Now You See Me: Now You Don’t‘s Isla Fisher, Andor‘s Alan Tudyk, Barry‘s Stephen Root, and Scrubs‘ Sarah Chalke.
Entertainment Weekly has now shared a gallery of exclusive first-look images from Playdate. The images showcase the high-octane adventure the two father-son duos embark upon, which includes Jeff driving with an unhinged gleam in his eyes, Brian looking perplexed at a pizzeria, and the quartet walking away from a mᴀssive explosion.
The images also include a behind-the-scenes sH๏τ of Luke Greenfield directing Banks Pierce in a scene where he is holding a ʙuттerfly in a park. Another offers a look at Isla Fisher’s character, Leslie, who is presumably one of the boys’ mothers, smoking a cigarette while hanging out at a picnic table with a group of friends.

What This Means For Playdate
While Kevin James is best known for his comedy movies (including many collaborations with Adam Sandler), he is no stranger to the action genre. His best known entries are probably 2009’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop and its 2015 sequel, which are Die Hard parodies that star James as a bumbling mall cop who always saves the day.
Adam Sandler has worked on more than a dozen Kevin James movies, either as a co-star or a producer.
Other action-comedies in his filmography include the MMA movie Here Comes the Boom and the big-budget sci-fi movie Pixels. However, in recent years, he has also starred in more serious movies with action elements.
This includes 2020’s Becky, in which he played the villainous leader of a Neo-Nazi gang, and 2025’s Guns Up, in which he plays a mob henchman trying to survive after messing up a job.
While Playdate seems to be taking a more comedic angle than either of those 2020s movies, the overall look of the images and the intensity of his character’s expressions seem to indicate that the upcoming project will be grittier and slightly less family friendly than his previous action-comedies.
