Jesus Christ Questions Whether Nicolas Cage Is His Father In New Horror

Noah Jupe’s teenage Jesus questioning whether Nicolas Cage’s Joseph is truly his father leads to problems in The Carpenter’s Son trailer. Written and directed by Lofty Nathan, The Carpenter’s Son is a biblical horror movie, set to premiere in movie theaters on November 14. In addition to Cage and Jupe, the movie stars FKA twigs as Mary, and Isla Johnston as Satan.

The movie takes place as Joseph, Mary, and Jesus attempt to settle down after years of being under threat. However, in their new, remote village, a mysterious stranger tries to entice Jesus to abandon his devout father’s rules. As violent, unnatural events begin to occur, and Jesus experiences horrifying visions of the future, Joseph realizes that a demonic power is at work.

Is The Carpenter’s Son Based On The Bible?

The promotional materials for The Carpenter’s Son do not make any reference that the movie is based on any particular Bible story or verse. The closest source material may have is the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, which details Jesus’ childhood. However, with that gospel being deemed apocryphal, meaning its authenticity is questioned and it’s not canonical with any Christian denomination, it should not be considered an adaptation of the Bible.

However, Nathan’s background in the Coptic Church, an Orthodox sect of the Christian Church based in Egypt, where the movie’s story is set, is said to have served as inspiration for the writer/director.

Our Take On The Carpenter’s Son Trailer

Like many of Cage’s movies in recent years, The Carpenter’s Son was flying under the radar a bit prior to this trailer. Though from what we see in the preview, it feels very much up Cage’s alley. The actor has been on a good run as of late, with acclaimed performances in the likes of the crime/horror Longlegs and the psychological thriller The Surfer.

Cage isn’t the only one of interest, however. Jupe is a rising star who broke out in movies like A Quiet Place and Honey Boy, while also having some notable TV roles in The Undoing, Franklin, and Lady in the Lake. It will be interesting to see the dynamic between Cage and Jupe here.

Meanwhile, this is another role for singer/songwriter FKA twigs in her burgeoning acting career. She recently starred in The Crow remake, but also previously appeared alongside Jupe in Honey Boy.

However, there’s a chance the breakout of this movie is Johnston. The young actress, probably best known for playing the younger Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, should have plenty of material as her character attempts to tempt the young Jesus.
