This trailer establishes the crux of the monster’s arc, who is out of place in the world and shown little love by his creator. In addition to this, the grandiose scale of the adaptation is on full display, showcasing how del Toro has poured all his signature eerie flair into this rich Gothic world, which is only the foundation for a haunting story about how “only monsters play god.“
What This Trailer Reveals About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein
2025’s Frankenstein has been described as “a father and son story,” exploring the tormented dynamic between the doctor and the monster he created. Additionally, Netflix’s X post revealing the trailer teases that “there are two sides to every story.” With the monster narrating the video in a raspy voice, he is determined to give his own account.
We are treated to more of the striking visuals that dominate this Gothic horror, and not just during the scenes in Frankenstein’s lab or the Arctic environment to which the monster flees. From the looks of it, even Frankenstein and his acquaintances moving throughout their everyday lives is accompanied by carefully constructed imagery.
Beginning with chilling, scarce piano notes before a haunting orchestral score takes over, Frankenstein‘s trailer promises a movie that is both quietly terrifying in its philosophical implications and epic in its presentation. It is gearing up to be the spectacular event of the Halloween season, the likes of which we may not see again for a long while.
What This Means For Frankenstein
Reviews for Frankenstein say that the performances are brilliant, and this new trailer reveals more to the public about how tragic Elordi’s take will be. While some pacing problems will likely hold Frankenstein back from dominating awards season in the way fans might have hoped for, this is the iconic director finally having his time with the work that has influenced much of his filmography.
And by all accounts, the results are breathtaking. Frankenstein is probably a shoo-in for Production Design and Costume Design, and maybe even the sound and music categories. Regardless, Frankenstein will go down in history beloved by fans of the classic Gothic horror novel for being the no-expenses-spared adaptation readers would hope for.
