Five Years Later, The Invisible Man 2 Gets Major Update From Elisabeth Moss

Elisabeth Moss opens up about the long-awaited The Invisible Man 2, revealing that she is “working on” the film. When The Invisible Man hit theaters in 2020, the thriller, written and directed by Leigh Whannell, garnered both critical acclaim and strong box office returns, and Moss’s chilling performance as Cecilia, a woman trapped by an abusive relationship, captivated audiences.

Despite the film’s success, updates on a potential sequel have been sparse. The Invisible Man was released just before the COVID-19 pandemic, which hampered many films’ production schedules. However, Whannel has also expressed no interest in developing The Invisible Man 2, seemingly satisfied with the film’s perfect ending. That being said, fans are still eagerly awaiting a follow-up movie.

Now, in an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Elisabeth Moss was asked whether she had any updates on The Invisible Man 2. Moss stated “I wish I did,” confirming that there is no further news on the sequel’s development. However, she also reaffirms that the pᴀssion is still there as, “We still want one, so we’re still working on it.”

It’s been five years since the last film, something Moss is all too aware of, although she defends the film’s delay, stating that Universal and Jason Blum could have “easily just churned out a sequel.” However, she’s happy they held back as, “I think if we’re going to do it, it’s got to be right.” Check out her full statement below:

It was out for two weeks before COVID and made hundreds of millions of dollars. We could have easily just churned out a sequel and thrown it up on streaming and called it a day, and I think some people would’ve made money off of that.

I am so grateful to Universal and Blum for not doing that and for having a standard that’s unusual in these circumstances and really wanting it to be worth doing. So it’s an unusual thing, but that doesn’t usually happen. But I feel like it’s important. We love that movie so much. The people who made it – we’re so proud of it.

We really want to make sure [that] if we do a sequel, it’s worthy and it’s going to have to be as good if not better. So that’s been kind of what’s slowed us down. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think if we’re going to do it, it’s got to be right. But we still want to do it. We’re still working on it. We just have to get the right script together.

What This Means For The Invisible Man 2

Moss’s comments reveal a dedication which bodes well for The Invisible Man 2. The desire for the sequel to live up to the standard set by its predecessor is “important,” and the team doesn’t want to disappoint fans or tarnish the film’s legacy by producing a rushed follow-up, despite the fact they could’ve profited from a sequel years ago.

Moss and the team are evidently committed to making a sequel that is “as good if not better” than the original movie, showing that they’re taking the right approach. Although this means that fans will have to wait a bit longer, when the time comes, it seems that a potential The Invisible Man sequel will be worth the anticipation.

Our Take On The Invisible Man Sequel’s Delay

I think that Moss’s perspective on the delay is refreshing. The film industry is often quick to capitalize on success, sometimes at the expense of quality, so the fact that they are determined to deliver a sequel which meets or exceeds expectations is admirable. It’s clear that The Invisible Man 2 isn’t just about making money, but honoring the original.

This somewhat echoes writer-director Whannel’s previous updates, where he stated that he didn’t want to tarnish the film’s ending with an unnecessary sequel. Ultimately, it looks like The Invisible Man 2 will likely be a more carefully crafted film than many fans anticipate if the film ever gets made, meaning the delays will hopefully be worth it in the end.
