The DCU’s Most Challenging Superhero Movie Finally Gets Exciting Update By James Gunn

One of the most challenging DC Universe projects is moving in the right direction as James Gunn shares a new update on the movie. DC Studios has been working on numerous projects for the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” since the January 2023 announcement, both for the big and small screens.

As 2025 had the new Superman movie and Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl and Clayface are the upcoming DCU movies for 2026, while HBO’s Lanterns is set to premiere next year too. However, outside of 2027’s Man of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II, the release schedule has yet to be fully laid out for DC Studios, as other movies are still in different development stages.

DCU’s The Authority Has Not Been Cancelled

One film that has been moving slowly since the initial reveal in January 2023 is The Authority, especially as DC Studios’ Superman introduced one of its primary members, Angela Spica, a.k.a. The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría. In February 2025, the film was defined as the hardest DCU project to get right during a press event with ScreenRant in attendance.

However, things could finally be turning around for the superhero ensemble, as ᴅᴇᴀᴅline got a new update from Gunn in a recent interview. While asking for progress on the gritty team-up film, the DC Studios co-CEO confirmed the following about what is going on with the project:

James Gunn: There’s someone who is a really good creator who talked to me the other day.

This prompted ᴅᴇᴀᴅline with a follow-up question, as the trade asked if this means that the movie could be reworked as a TV show instead. However, the Superman and Man of Tomorrow filmmaker remained тιԍнт-lipped, by adding the following about what this could mean for The Authority characters:

James Gunn: Who knows. I’m probably not going to do certain movies with characters who (audiences) don’t know; it’s harder to get people in the theater for that kind of thing.

What This Means For The Authority

Given that the franchise is still early into its run, it’s understandable that DC Studios could possibly be considering reworking the film into a TV series, especially as The Authority players are extremely obscure to the general audience. A show could also devote more time to getting to know these characters a lot better than a two-hour film could accomplish.

This is also not the only project that has been progressing slowly, as the TV shows Waller and Paradise Lost have faced a similar trajectory, while films like Sgt. Rock weren’t at the right place yet in order for them to go forward. Based on his past comments, The Brave and The Bold movie and the Wonder Woman film are higher priorities right now.

If other series are taking longer to happen, it may be beneficial for the darker superhero group to get the small-screen treatment, especially if they can develop that team faster for TV. Hopefully, after Gunn’s newest comments, The Authority will soon get a great future at DC Studios.
