Liam Neeson’s Poorly-Reviewed Action Thriller Becomes Instant Netflix Global Hit

Liam Neeson’s new action thriller has become an instant streaming success after its arrival on Netflix. A sequel to 2021’s The Ice Road, Jonathan Hensleigh’s Ice Red: Vengeance stars the Taken actor as a grieving American ice road truck traveling to scatter his late brother’s ashes on Mt. Everest, which leads to a dangerous mission.

Joining Neeson in the cast are Fan Bingbing, Marcus Thomas, Grace O’Sullivan, Amelia Bishop, and many more. The movie arrived on Netflix on September 15.

Ice Road: Vengeance became an instant Netflix global hit, ranking No. 3 on the streamer’s Top 10 Movies global chart during its first week on the platform, having generated 7.6 million views. The movie is right behind KPop Demon Hunters at No.2, with The Wrong Paris occupying the top spot.

What This Means For Liam Neeson’s Ice Road: Vengeance

Ice Road: Vengeance is only No.1 in the United States. More interestingly, the movie isn’t among the Top 10 most successful movies in any other country. This means Neeson’s action thriller sequel’s mᴀssive success in the US alone was responsible for its spot atop Netflix’s global chart.

Released in 2021, The Ice Road was a major success for Netflix. Despite the divisive-to-negative reviews it received from critics, the movie debuted as the most popular movie on the platform and led to a follow-up. It seems that Vengeance has replicated its predecessor’s success, but the movie is even worse rated.

The Ice Road has a 43% critic score and a 31% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Ice Road: Vengeance only has a 14% critical approval rate. Among all who left a review, only 26% of the audience gave it a thumbs-up.

The Ice Road was the biggest debut on Netflix at the time, but it also stayed on the streaming charts for multiple weeks. Vengeance‘s streaming success proves that even four years later, the interest in the Neeson action franchise is still strong.

Vengeance has only been on the platform for a week, and its success is will largely be determined by its performance in the coming weeks. Outside Netflix, the movie is also available to rent or buy on the Amazon platform. At the time of writing, the movie is the most popular movie worldwide on Prime Video, followed by Madame Web and The Map That Led to You.
