Lionsgate reveals the trailer for Gerard Butler’s Greenland 2: Migration. The sequel to 2020’s Greenland, Migration again follows John Garrity (Butler) and his family as they are forced to leave their previously safe bunker to find a new home amid a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Greenland: Migration, directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune, releases in theaters on January 9, 2026, and also stars Morena Baccarin as John’s wife Allison, and Roman Griffin Davis as the recast for their son. Check out the first trailer below:
The new trailer recaps the main premise of the first movie, where a catastrophic meteor strike drove the main family, alongside many others, to take shelter in bunkers in Greenland. Five years later, most of the rest of the world has been destroyed, while this populace lives on underground, but for John and Allison’s son, especially, this is a suffocating life.
However, it is discovered that there may be a section of habitable outdoors on the other side of the Earth, prompting the Garrity family to undertake a new, dangerous journey and face new natural disasters across crumbling civilization, hoping to reach a better life. Greenland 2 also stars Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie.
What This Means For Greenland 2
Greenland was forced to premiere digitally due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but went on to become a solid hit and maintains a 77% Rotten Tomatoes score. We will never know how this movie would have fared with a theatrical release, though the pattern of a streaming debut being the means for a franchise to establish itself is at least partially due to the pandemic.
Greenland 2 is the chance for the series to have a big theatrical release, hopefully propelled forward by the eager fanbase. Greenland: Migration‘s January release date indicates less confidence in it being able to perform as a summer blockbuster, but there will be less compeтιтion. The trailer advertises the stakes well, and if screened ahead of the right movies in the coming months, it could draw in large audiences.
Our Take On Greenland 2’s First Trailer
On the other hand, Greenland 2 has to live up to the acclaim its predecessor has amᴀssed. It might have a certain number of people already committed to seeing it in theaters, but if word of mouth doesn’t take off in the first week, it could fall on its face at the box office.
This trailer for Greenland 2: Migration suggests a good mix of personal emotional stakes against the backdrop of exploring how the world will crumble and then evolve in this scenario. One would hope that the new movie handles these themes in a complex, satisfying way, but avoiding ruining Greenland‘s hopeful ending is a major obstacle.
