New WW2 Revenge Thriller Debuts With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

The forthcoming revenge thriller Sisu: Road to Revenge has debuted with a fantastic Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its theatrical release. The sequel to 2022’s Sisu, also written and directed by Jalmari Helander, Road to Revenge follows Jorma Tommila’s Aatami Korpi, who is now embroiled in a violent conflict with a Red Army Commander (Stephen Lang), who killed Aatami’s family.

The first Sisu movie was a sleeper hit, which maintains a 94% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On behalf of RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico compliments this movie again while praising the sequel, saying: “[It] reimagines everything that worked about Sisu, but it does what an action sequel should do and builds on it instead of just repeating the same barely-controlled chaos. This movie rules.”

Sisu: Road to Revenge has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect 100% critics’ score, from 12 critics’ reviews so far. The action is the most praised element of the sequel, with comparisons being made to Mad Max: Fury Road, though this movie is set just after the end of World War II (following the first movie taking place during).

Sisu: Road to Revenge had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 21 and releases in the U.S. on November 21.

What This RT Score Means For Sisu: Road To Revenge

Sisu went unnoticed by Hollywood’s biggest insтιтutions in 2022, but the established foothold the franchise now has could help it garner more award nominations this time around. However, the focus on the outrageous action and the straightforward revenge and battle of wills plot still doesn’t exactly prime the movie to compete with this year’s biggest festival darlings.

Road to Revenge, coming from Finland, could be submitted for consideration for Best International Feature at the forthcoming Academy Awards, albeit with the prize in this category almost certainly going to It Was Just an Accident. Regardless of awards, fans of the first Sisu will adore its follow-up, as it seemingly lives up to the original.

Sisu is on its way to becoming not just a sleeper hit but a cult phenomenon, extending its critical success with a second movie. Maybe it will never be nominated for any major awards, which will just stir up fans’ ire as both audiences and critics again clearly recognize its merits.

Sisu: Road to Revenge also stands to gross more at the worldwide box office this time around, having done the hard work of accumulating a fanbase. I don’t envy any movie coming out the same day as Wicked, but its cult status means that there will be some who pᴀssionately argue that this is the movie to see that weekend.
