Thor is played by a new actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest series, with Chris Hemsworth shockingly not returning to voice the God of Thunder. When it comes to the MCU’s best movies, Hemsworth has starred in quite a few. The actor holds the record for most solo films in the franchise, with four, soon to be tied by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Hemsworth has played Thor in a wide range of projects, ranging from four Thor movies to four Avengers entries and more. The actor will soon be back in at least one upcoming MCU movie, being the first star announced for Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast. However, Thor is played by another actor in the MCU’s new TV show, breaking a franchise pattern.
Chris Hemsworth Does Not Play Thor In The MCU’s New TV Show
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Marvel Zombies.Hemsworth’s Thor did not appear in any of the MCU’s three movies released in 2025: Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, the character has an important role to play in the MCU’s new TV show, Marvel Zombies, but Hemsworth does not return to voice Thor in the TV-MA animated series.
Instead, Marvel Zombies sees Greg Furman step into the God of Thunder’s shoes, playing Thor for the first time. The actor is known for The Goldbergs and his voice work in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Furman’s Thor is similar to Hemsworth’s in Avengers: Infinity War, though he fights zombie Thanos and ends up badly injured, with half of his body permanently damaged.
Thor has an interesting role in Marvel Zombies, going through an arc that mirrors his shame and eventual recovery in Avengers: Endgame. In the series, Thor sits quietly in New Asgard for years after his fight with zombie Thanos. He springs into action to stall the Scarlet Witch and her zombies, allowing the heroes to escape. Zombie Thor is later killed by Infinity Hulk.
Why Was Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Recast For Marvel Zombies?
The MCU has yet to explain why Chris Hemsworth did not return to play Thor in Marvel Zombies. The medium is not the problem, as plenty of Marvel actors return to voice their MCU characters in the multiverse series, with Hemsworth not being a stranger to Marvel Animation. After all, the actor did voice Thor in multiple episodes of Disney+’s What If…?
A couple of explanations could be behind Thor’s MCU recast. An actor like Hemsworth might have faced scheduling issues, with other projects making it difficult for the star to return as Thor. Alternatively, Thor only has a few lines in Marvel Zombies, so Chris Hemsworth might simply have been too expensive to bring back for just a limited role.
