Blumhouse’s upcoming movie Black Phone 2 is getting great reviews from legendary horror author Stephen King. Based on Stephen King’s son Joe Hill’s 2004 short story of the same name, Hill is working behind the scenes and clearly has given King a sneak peek into the sequel.
Supernatural horror The Black Phone was first released in 2021 and followed the story of 13-year-old Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), who is kidnapped and held captive in a soundproof basement by a masked maniac, The Grabber (Ethan Hawke).
A disconnected phone starts to ring, and Finney soon learns that The Grabber’s previous victims can communicate with him to ensure he can escape and avoid meeting the same fate.
Black Phone 2 will feature the original cast, and director Scott Derrickson will return as well. Finney’s 13-year-old sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), receives mysterious phone calls and is encumbered with visions of three boys as they are being stalked at a winter camp by The Grabber.
On X, Stephen King shared his excitement for the release of Black Phone 2:
“It’s not as good as the first one.
IT’S BETTER.”
What Stephen King’s Approval Means For Black Phone 2
Stephen King’s accolades are a major turning point for skeptics heading to watch the horror sequel. As history indicates, horror sequels are either a hit or a miss. After the first film’s rave reviews, it can be almost impossible to compare or even excel.
The Black Phone grossed over $161 million worldwide at the box office with an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It wasn’t originally meant to have a sequel, but after its success, it became clear they had something worth pursuing.
Early screenings of Black Phone 2 have garnered mostly positive reviews, and it’s exciting to see horror legend Stephen King has given his stamp of approval as well.
Our Take On Black Phone 2
Horror sequels are never easy to get right, but that’s not to say it’s impossible. A Quiet Place Part II, Evil ᴅᴇᴀᴅ II, and The Conjuring 2 were all successful following their predecessors’ success.
However, it can be hard to gauge what to expect from Black Phone 2 based on the source material only being a short story, which was used for the first film. Joe Hill staying on board can only be good news for the story, and with encouraging words from his father, fans are in for a treat when this horror hits the theaters.
