John Boyega knows what he would change about the Star Wars sequels that he starred in. The actor who played Finn in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker has recently made stops at fan conventions where he hasn’t been shy about expressing his views on his Star Wars trilogy.
The latest example came at Florida Supercon 2025, where Boyega shared how he would have gone about things had he been a producer overseeing the movies. In particular, three things: he would not have killed off Han Solo or Luke Skywalker; the new characters would have faced more challenges; and he would have looked to stories like from The Old Republic and Force Unleashed to expand the universe.
After being asked by a fan during a panel what he would do differently if he were in charge of remaking the Star Wars sequels, Boyega began:
“First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.
He would later add:
“Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock. Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those actors way more way more.”
As for his other points, Boyega said that new characters, which included his character Finn, were “OP’d,” or overpowered, being able to grab stuff and quickly use them, like how both he and Daisy Ridley’s Rey were able to wield a lightsaber against Kylo Ren. As for using The Old Republic and The Force Unleashed video games, Boyega said he would want to “expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore.”
John Boyega Echoes Desire For Star Wars Sequel Do-Over
Boyega is hardly the first person to discuss how they wish the Star Wars sequels had taken a different path. Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill has also been vocal about how he disagreed with Luke’s arc and the backstory he had to come up with to justify it. Then you have the fans, who have created more than one Change.or peтιтion to either remove the sequels from the Star Wars canon or remake them.
There is no indication that anything like that will be happening. However, new Star Wars movies are on the way that many hope will breathe life back into the franchise. That includes The Mandalorian & Grogu, which just dropped its first trailer; Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter; and a new movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey.
Our Take On John Boyega’s Star Wars Revision Ideas
It’s hard to argue with Boyega on any of his points, really. While I’m not as critical about how the legacy characters were handled in the sequels, there definitely could have been improvement. On the other hand, the fact that Finn, and particularly Rey, were instantly able to do things with the Force was annoying. As far as the lore, considering how the Snoke and Palpatine storylines panned out, I get the frustration when there were rich storylines to take from in other Star Wars material.
While I appreciate Boyega’s honesty, I do wonder if it may hurt his chances of returning to Star Wars in the future. If that’s the case, perhaps he can head to the Spaceballs galaxy.
