James Gunn’s Batman Movie Gets The Best DC News Yet

The Brave and the Bold film gets new updates from James Gunn regarding the Batsuit and the DC Universe’s story for the iconic hero. One of the most highly anticipated projects in the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” is the new Batman entry, which will bring the Caped Crusader into DC Studios’ new superhero franchise.

Set to be directed by Andy Muschietti, the project was one of the first тιтles revealed back in January 2023, when Gunn and Peter Safran shared their initial line-up of movies and TV shows for the interconnected universe. While the script is still being written, many are excited to see where Bruce Wayne’s solo story will take the crime-fighter.

Gunn was the latest guest on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, where the subject of Batman was brought up, including whether his version will go with the blue-and-grey costume. While discussing how many audience members have said as much to him on social media, the DC Studios co-CEO gave the following comments:

There’s a religious aspect to some of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable. Should Batman have white eyes? That’s a big subject of conversation. It’s like, “Guys, that’s really what matters?” But those are the things they care about. Should his utility belt be yellow? Should he have the yellow crest around the bat? All of that sort of stuff. None of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story. and I think we have a really really good story now for what’s happening with Batman.

I think that’s one of the fun things about Batman though, is that there are so many expressions of Batman that are cool, and [having] different ways to access that character is one of the ways in which he’s so iconic. I don’t think it’s a matter of the blue and the grey or the black Batman. I think both those things are really cool. I like the detective Batman, but I also really like the fighter Batman, that’s just the brute that’s, you know, fighting. I like the silly ’50s Silver Age Batman, with Bat-Mite. I like all of these different versions of Batman.

While the script is being written, the screenwriter for The Brave and the Bold has yet to be revealed, nor is there a release date currently attached. The casting for Batman in the DCU has also yet to begin, but Gunn has previously stated that there are a few names he has on his list.

When it comes to the beloved hero’s costume in the DCU timeline, the Superman director has a valid point that the suit is the least important aspect. While there are a lot of approaches they can go with the design, the story is what needs to be the strongest aspect.

If the plot isn’t working, it doesn’t matter what Batsuit interpretation they go with for whoever ends up playing the Caped Crusader in the upcoming film. From his latest comments, it definitely sounds like The Brave and the Bold movie is moving in the right direction regarding Bruce Wayne’s arc.

From everything Gunn has shared about his own pᴀssion for the Dark Knight, it’s clear that the DCU franchise wants to celebrate as many elements of the famous hero as possible for this new era. Thus, it wouldn’t be shocking if the blue-and-grey costume is featured in some capacity.

Given that the DCU’s Bruce will have been operating as Batman for quite some time, it would make sense if that is at least one of the suits he has donned at some point during his crusade. Doubtlessly, fans are eager for The Brave and the Bold script to be completed, so they can find out more about the casting and costumes.
