Practical Magic has been dominating streaming for the past month. Directed by Griffin Dunne and based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, the 1998 romantic fantasy film follows two witch sisters who, suffering from a family curse, were raised by their eccentric aunts and, as adults, must use their powers to defeat the evil spirit of an abusive boyfriend.
Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Nicole Kidman (The Hours) lead Practical Magic‘s cast as Sally and Gilly Owens alongside two-time Oscar winner Dianne Wiest (Hannah and Her Sisters, Bullets Over Broadway) and Oscar nominee Stockard Channing (Six Degrees of Separation) as Aunt Jet and Frances. Two-time Emmy nominee Aidan Quinn and Goran Visnjic also star.
Now, ahead of the sequel’s release next year, Practical Magic ranks third on Hulu’s Top 15 movies in the United States for today, September 2, where it has been for a whopping 46 days. It currently ranks below Swiped and Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, and above Fear Below, John Wick: Chapter 4, Would You Rather, and The Other Woman.
It also ranks above Night at the Museum, The Devil Wears Prada, World War Z, Kingsman: The Secret Service, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bedazzled, The Proposal, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
What Practical Magic’s Streaming Success Means For The Movie
Practical Magic wasn’t a mᴀssive success at the time of its release. In fact, it bombed at the box office by making only $68 million against its $75 million budget. The movie was also panned by critics, indicated by its 26% Rotten Tomatoes score, many of whom felt that its blend of genres – including supernatural fantasy, domestic abuse drama, romantic comedy, and crime procedural – was disjointed.
Over time, however, Practical Magic developed a cult following, resulting in a stronger 73% audience score, mostly due to its star-studded cast, soundtrack, and feminist themes. As a result, Practical Magic 2 was announced last year, featuring several returning cast members, and is currently scheduled for a release one year from now, on September 18, 2026.
Our Take On Practical Magic’s Streaming Success
Practical Magic‘s streaming success provides a strong argument for the upcoming sequel. Though the original movie was neither a critical nor a commercial success upon its release, it has developed a strong cult following over the years and continues to be popular among audiences. With fans keeping it near the top of Hulu’s chart for over a month, Practical Magic 2 not only feels justified but long overdue.
