The Mandalorian & Grogu’s First Trailer Divides Star Wars Fans

The Mandalorian & Grogu trailer has arrived, and as with most things Star Wars these days (save for Andor), fans are divided over how they feel about it. After three seasons of The Mandalorian, and a major subplot in The Book of Boba Fett, Din Djarin, aka Mando, and Grogu are headlining their own movie, the first Star Wars big screen adventure since 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White headline the cast of this Jon Favreau-directed movie, which will see Pascal’s Mando helping the New Republic as they look to establish order across the galaxy and track down remaining Imperial warlords. The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres exclusively in movie theaters on May 22, 2026.

In the hours since the trailer’s release, reactions on X/Twitter have seen Star Wars fans taking sides. Check out some of the diverging reactions below:

Meanwhile, @captaincupkicks feels that this seemingly back-to-basics plot is what The Mandalorian & Grogu movie needed following after some of the criticism toward The Mandalorian season 3.

What This Means For The Mandalorian & Grogu

Again, outside of Andor, Star Wars projects are having a hard time receiving universal acclaim right now. The Mandalorian had a good track record, but what many fans deemed a disappointing season 3 may have lowered the excitement for the duo’s first big screen adventure.

That said, this should do little to dampen the blockbuster potential of The Mandalorian & Grogu. Let’s not forget, Solo: A Star Wars Story made $392 million at the worldwide box office when it was released in 2018. That wasn’t great by the franchise’s usual box office receipts, and the movie is still widely seen as a flop, but Solo still ended up among the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year in the US.

We also need to realize that this is the first of likely numerous trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu, so there’s time for more of the movie to be revealed to entice fans.

Our Take On The Mandalorian & Grogu Trailer

Still, just going off what we have, I have to side with the detractors right now; this was an underwhelming trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu.

It feels like this should be the teaser for a brand-new season of The Mandalorian rather than a big movie event. In addition to the look, the little that is revealed of the plot in the trailer and the official synopsis from Disney makes it feel like this is just a usual arc for Mando and Grogu; grabbing some bounties and hanging out with new friends. I understand not wanting to give too much away, but the trailer was missing anything to make us feel like this is a story that needs to be told on the biggest screens, outside of them literally telling us that it was “forged for IMAX.”

I’ll be happy to be proven wrong as more is revealed about the movie and if reviews are good. However, The Mandalorian & Grogu‘s first impression was a weak one for me.
