Seven years after The Rise of Skywalker, the Star Wars franchise is finally returning to movie theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and its first trailer promises a thrilling adventure. Based on the mᴀssively successful live-action TV show The Mandalorian, this Jon Favreau-directed flick is bringing our newest beloved characters to the big screen.
The first trailer shows just how promising the franchise’s newest cinematic adventure is. The teaser follows Din Djarin and Grogu on what looks to be a handful of their under-the-table “bounty hunting” jobs for the New Republic rangers, including our first look at Sigourney Weaver’s character, Colonel Ward.

The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ in 2019, launching a new era of live-action Star Wars TV projects, and was well-received by fans (at least for the first two seasons). In addition to bringing back fan-favorite characters in this space of Star Wars, The Mandalorian and Grogu is introducing exciting new A-listers to the franchise, including The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt.
Disney’s synopsis for The Mandalorian and Grogu is as follows:
The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.
What The Mandalorian And Grogu’s First Trailer Means For Star Wars
The Mandalorian and Grogu will release on May 22, 2026 — by which time it will have been seven years since we last saw a Star Wars movie in theaters. Another upcoming Star Wars movie is in the works, Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, which recently began filming somewhere in the Mediterranean.
Lucasfilm has struggled to orient itself after the end of the sequel trilogy, but the wait is now almost over, and The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t seem to be pulling any punches. From its big spectacles to its smaller character moments, this trailer already highlights the best of The Mandalorian series.
Our Take On The Mandalorian And Grogu’s First Trailer
Certain elements from the trailer really stand out when much press has surrounded sci-fi legend Sigourney Weaver and relatively new A-lister Jeremy Allen White joining the cast. We only see moments of a tense but amusing interaction between Weaver’s Colonel Ward and the тιтular duo, while also seemingly catching a first glimpse of Rotta in action.
But overall, the teaser trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu showcases what looks to be a fun, action-packed adventure, with the more serious elements grounded in the main characters’ relationship. Given the ups and downs in Star Wars’ road to where it is now, delivering something charming, lighthearted, and sincere could be its best move in 2026.
