Following its release being pushed back multiple times, production for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is well under way according to one of its stars. The H๏τly anticipated sequel will pick up after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, which saw Miles Morales/Spider-Man (Shameik Moore) captured and stranded in an alternate universe. Meanwhile, Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and the Spider-Society are still H๏τ on his trail.
Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally planned for a March 29, 2024, release, before being pushed to June 4, 2027, and subsequently June 25, 2027. Additionally, cast members such as Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman) have previously revealed that actors are recording their lines.
Now, another actor has given a more concrete idea of how the film is coming along. Speaking with Screen Rant’s Liam Crowley to promote Tron: Ares, Greta Lee, who voices Spider-Man 2099’s AI ᴀssistant Lyla, opened up about the recording process:
Screen Rant: Spider-Verse 3 is in post-production now. Have you recorded your lines as Lyla? What are your feelings?
Greta Lee: Uh-uh. Yeah-huh. I love being a part of that, and getting to do voice work with the guys… It’s a wonderful mix of all the things that I love. It’s comedic, the world of it is so rich, and the writing is so good. It’s so fun to record.
Screen Rant: How did the experience compare to the first two?
Greta Lee: We did a lot of it together. The next one, we grouped it with the last one.
What Greta Lee’s Comments Mean For Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse
Given Lee’s comments, it seems that Beyond the Spider-Verse may be further along in production than previously thought. Considering that Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse were initially developed as a singular film, it’s not a surprise that Lee already recorded her parts for both films.
Lyla is a supporting character in the Spider-Verse films, and her role is such that she may be less impacted by rewrites than, say, Moore or Steinfeld. That being said, it’s most likely that some cast members recorded for both at once, some were split, and others recorded later.
Our Take On Greta Lee’s Comments About Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse
Nonetheless, Lee paints a very positive picture of her time working on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. According to the star, this latest installment promises to continue expanding on the creative, fun world established in the first two films. Additionally, with the news that another cast member has finished their work on the film, it feels closer than ever. After all, June 2027 is now less than two years away.
