28 Years Later Visual Mistakes Spotted By VFX Artists: "It's Like An Animation"

The visual effects in 28 Years Later were put under the microscope by a team of visual effects artists in a new YouTube video, and they found a handful of mistakes.

28 Years Later is the acclaimed sequel to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s zombie franchise that premiered earlier in 2025. Taking place nearly three decades after the events of 28 Days Later, the movie focuses on a young boy who ventures out of his protected community into the wilds of the English country, where the infected and other dangers await.

The YouTube channel Corridor Crew created the video, with VFX artists Jordan Allen, Sam Gorski, and Wren Weichman commenting on 28 Years Later visual effects. At the 5:55 mark in the video the trio describe the scene they had the biggest issues with, when Spike (Alfie Williams) and his dad Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) come across a herd of deer stampeding through the fields.

“Jordan: They’re all moving a bit slow and a little floaty to me. Like if you’re watching them kind of glide over that hill.

Sam: Oh, I straight up see the feet slide. … It’s like all the same animation. You can literally see them like sliding.

Jordan: It’s like an animation, there’s not like contact with the ground that is progressing them forward, it’s more of a run cycle that they’re sliding over the land… at least that’s how it appears.”

The team also brought up the shadows from the deer were too thick and too edged, which they said was the incorrect thing to do. Despite the criticisms, they acknowledged that it was a tough task to pull off, and ultimately the 28 Years Later team succeeded at making a giant herd of deer stampede across the field.

Praise For 28 Years Later’s Visual Effects

The video goes over a number of other scenes from 28 Years Later and the trio’s opinion on them. While they acknowledged some things like the challenges of doing visual effects work with iPhones (which 28 Years Later was sH๏τ on), they also praised a handful of scenes’ visual effects work.

In particular, Sam thought that the fire in the gas station scene had a lot of practical effects, but learned that the flames were added as visual effects later on. Similarly, they thought some of the instances of blood spatter looked pretty convincing to the team.

Perhaps the most fun bit was that they briefly convinced Wren that one of the infected zombies (the one some internet sleuths thought looked like Cillian Murphy’s Jim), was actually a CGI creation. In fact, the film used a real person whose body type worked with what they wanted, adding to his look with make-up.

The best thing you can say about visual effects is that you didn’t even notice it in a movie. For the most part that was the case for me with 28 Years Later. However, it was interesting to watch actual VFX experts offer a closer inspection of the film’s VFX. It definitely shines a light on a less heralded part of the filmmaking process.
