Henry Cavill takes to social media to share a new update on the Highlander reboot following his injury. Serving as a reboot of the 1986 fantasy film of the same name, the upcoming project hails from John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski.
Like the original, the Highlander reboot is expected to follow MacLeod (Cavill) an immortal Scottish swordsman who must confront other immortal warriors in order to gain a magical ability. The film was originally expected to start filming this fall, but it was just recently delayed after Cavill suffered a leg injury.
Cavill now shares a Highlander update on Instagram, where he appears to be in good spirits. The actor includes a selfie with his dog and another sH๏τ of his heavily bandaged ankle. Cavill accompanies the image with the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley. Check out the post and caption below:

What This Means For Highlander
One of the reasons why the action in the John Wick movies is so impressive is due to Stahelski’s love of extensive prep. Actors and stunt performers will train for months on end to make sure they’re able to pull off the choreography when it comes time to film. Cavill’s injury occurred during training for Highlander, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Instead of filming this fall, Highlander filming is now expected to get underway early in 2026. Though the reboot does not have a firm release date yet, this new filming window will mean a likely theatrical bow in 2027. A release in 2028 is also not completely off the table.
Though Cavill may be out of commission for a few months, the fact that he injured his ankle during training suggests audiences are in for more of Stahelski’s signature brand of highly choreographed action. Much of the action in John Wick involves guns and grapples, but Highlander will obviously be more about swordplay, potentially meaning some exciting action innovations.
Our Take On Henry Cavill’s Highlander Update
As Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Netflix’s The Witcher have made clear, Cavill is willing to get into the trenches when it comes to filming fight scenes. Behind-the-scenes videos from both properties show the actor doing a great deal of the action himself, rather than relying on stunt performers. It’s this dedication that could be to blame for his latest injury.
Cavill and Stahelski seem like a match made in heaven, in many ways. It will be interesting to see how Stahelski pushes Cavill as an action star, and the Highlander reboot could feature the best action of Cavill’s career.
Other than Superman, Cavill has arguably struggled to find movies that really take advantage of his leading man qualities and physicality. Though he was great in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, he wasn’t the lead there. Highlander could mark the start of a new era for Cavill, and more should be revealed about the project when filming gets underway next year.
