10 Criminally Underrated Westerns You Should Watch On Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video’s library is stocked with criminally underrated Westerns. The streaming service has a respectable lineup of classics, from some of John Wayne’s greatest Westerns to the remake of The Magnificent Seven. But it also has some hidden gems of the genre that many may not even be aware of.

Films from many of the Western genre’s best stars can be found in their lineup. They may not have the star power of household names like Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and James Stewart, but during their careers, the likes of Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Audie Murphy made a slew of enjoyable Westerns.

Unfortunately, a lot of these were either forgotten over time or didn’t get the appreciation they deserved, even at the time of their release. But, they can now be rediscovered – or watched for the first time via streaming.

Canadian Pacific

Randolph Scott talks to a woman in Canadian Pacific

Lacking an exciting тιтle and being just one of a mulтιтude of 1940s Randolph Scott-led Westerns, it’s easy to look past Canadian Pacific, but the film is definitely a worthwhile watch, as it casts Scott – not as another cowboy hero or gunslinger – but as a surveyor commited to the construction of the Canadian Pacific railroad.

The movie surrounds Randolph Scott with a great cast in Nancy Olson, J. Carroll Naish, and perhaps best of all, the consistently hilarious George “Gabby” Hayes, who makes for a great sidekick for Scott’s likable protagonist as he navigates a love triangle and staves off threats to the railroad project both from within the town and a tribe of Native Americans.

Duck, You Sucker!

When it comes to the subject of Sergio Leone, his three collaborations with Clint Eastwood and Once Upon a Time in the West are usually at the forefront of the discussion. Given the popularity of these films, it’s no surprise that his 1971 Spaghetti Western has a tendency to go unmentioned.

Starring James Coburn and Rod Steiger, Duck, You Sucker! follows an unlikely pair of protagonists from differing backgrounds who find themselves drawn into an action-packed crusade during the Mexican Revolution. Despite not enjoying a more widespread reputation, it currently boasts a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hour Of The Gun

10 years after Rod Sturges famously helmed the critically acclaimed 1957 classic, Gunfight at the OK Corral, the director returned for a second retelling of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp’s experiences at Tombstone. This version didn’t achieve the widespread recognition of the Kirk Douglas movie, but Hour of the Gun was regarded as a more historically accurate version.

Although it’s not on the same level as Gunfight at OK Corral‘s top-tier cast, Hour of the Gun features a handful of recognizable Western stars, including Robert Ryan, James Garner, and Jason Robards.

More ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Than Alive

Clint Walker stands cautiously in More ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Than Alive-1

In 1967, Western TV star Clint Walker headlined More ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Than Alive, a film that tells the story of a former gunslinger who spent 18 years in prison over one of the many killings from his past. More ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Than Alive sees him try to build a new life for himself while struggling to escape from his reputation.

Also offering a surprising but welcome performance from Vincent Price, More ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Than Alive has a shocking ending that makes it a must-watch ’60s Western.

Many Rivers To Cross

Robert Taylor, one of Hollywood’s top stars in the 1950s, starred opposite Eleanor Parker in Many Rivers to Cross, a movie that perfectly blends the Western and romantic comedy genres. In the movie, Robert Taylor plays a fur trapper who enjoys the life of a loner until he enters the crosshairs of Parker’s character, a woman determined to go to great lengths to marry him.

Although not nearly as famous, Many Rivers to Cross bears many similarities to the John Wayne classic, The Quiet Man, and even includes a great fist fight between Taylor and Victor MacLaglen, the actor who portrayed John Wayne’s opponent in his iconic slugfest from the 1952 movie.

The Angel And The Badman

Given the number of Westerns John Wayne made throughout his career, it goes without saying that quite a few have gone unappreciated. One such film is Angel and the Badman, a Western romance that paired “The Duke” with Gail Russell.

The underrated Western follows a dangerous outlaw – played by John Wayne – who finds himself in the company of a Quaker family, whom he steadily develops a strong bond with. The character arc that John Wayne’s anti-hero experiences in Angel and the Badman marks a memorable turn for the actor.

Slow West

Slow West bombed at the box office in 2015, but that lackluster performance is hardly indicative of its quality. Rated at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, Slow West focuses on a bounty hunter, played by Michael Fᴀssbender, who is hired to escort a teenager across the Wild West to meet the girl he loves.

Slow West isn’t a fast-paced, action-packed adventure, and instead delivers a deep, and emotional journey for its main characters, accompanied by standout performances from its cast. Slow West is easily one of the best Westerns of the 2010s.

Escort West

Victor Mature in Escort West-1

Victor Mature, a veteran of the Western movie genre, stars in Escort West as an ex-soldier and single father who takes two women into his company as he travels through treacherous territory in the Wild West in the aftermath of the Civil War.

The entertaining 1959 movie is a rather traditional Western, but delivers many of the hallmarks of a quality entry in the genre: excellent cinematography, an entertaining ride through the Wild West, and thrilling encounters with a Native American tribe.

Lawman

Burt Lancaster in Lawman

Released in 1971, Lawman was a late outing for Burt Lancaster, who made a slew of Westerns during the height of his career in the 1950s. In Lawman, he plays a sheriff committed to arresting several people over an accidental (but careless) killing.

What makes his struggle so interesting is the fact that these aren’t typical outlaws, but ordinary people who have the respect of the townsfolk. But Burt Lancaster’s character, a principled lawman, is willing to face the opposition of his own people to see that justice is done.

Man With The Gun

Robert Mitchum in Man with the Gun

Man With The Gun introduces a great Western hero in the form of Robert Mitchum’s Clint Tolliger, a mercenary with a unique modus operandi; people hire him to basically clean up towns, making them safe from crime.

His unusual job builds the framework for a fun Western classic, with Robert Mitchum’s flair for portraying “tough guys” going hand-in-hand with the story and the townsfolk’s perception of their new self-appointed protector.
