An unexpected Star Wars sequel to The LEGO Movie, released in 2014, has been released over a decade later. LEGO is no stranger to the Star Wars franchise. Despite the focus of the vast Star Wars timeline being its theatrical movies and TV shows, several LEGO stories have been told in a galaxy far, far away over the years.
Upcoming Star Wars TV shows are set to continue this, if 2025 is anything to go by. Of course, the franchise is shifting its focus to the upcoming Star Wars movies, beginning with 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, that is not to say the fun LEGO adventures of the past will stop.
In 2025, Lucasfilm proved as much by releasing a project that serves as a spiritual sequel to 2014’s The LEGO Movie.
Star Wars’ New LEGO Show Just Repeated All The LEGO Movie’s Best Themes
The sequel in question was not made with The LEGO Movie in mind, but it proved to be a fun Star Wars adventure that continued the 2014 movie’s best themes. The project was LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past, a sequel to 2024’s LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.
Overall, the sequel was much more confident than the first series was, delving deeper into the story of Sig Greebling, a Jedi with the ability to Force Build. Beyond that, though, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past immersed itself in some deeper themes that link to The LEGO Movie.
The story centered around the conflict between Sig and his allies and a new villain named Solitus. Solitus intends to remove the galaxy and store it in the Force Hold, allowing him to be the sole surviving person in a galaxy of quiet. Sig and his friends push back, defeating Solitus’ “peace” by building both constructs and relationships and overcoming his reign.
Like The LEGO Movie, Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past tackles the themes of how creativity and teamwork are better than conformity and mundanity. This is similar to the fight against President Business in The LEGO Movie, with Pieces of the Past‘s Solitus being a darker version of that villain.
Sig and his crew of Star Wars characters, which are chock-full of Easter eggs and references, emulate The LEGO Movie‘s heroes. Many of the themes and messages included in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past are similar, tying the project spiritually to The LEGO Movie.
LEGO Star Wars Is Going From Strength To Strength
With this in mind, it is clear that LEGO Star Wars is only improving. The first Rebuild the Galaxy, released in 2024, was enjoyable enough, but it was nothing to write home about. Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past, however, is a big improvement. The show continues the fun, Easter egg-filled story of its predecessor, only with more confidence.
The aforementioned themes go a little deeper than they did in the first project, with the characters and action sequences being more thought-out. If LEGO Star Wars can continue this upward trend in storytelling quality, who knows how great the subsection of the franchise could be in the future?
