The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a couple of versions of Superman, and one of them is coming back in just one week. Given the nature of comic books, Marvel and DC have created copies or different versions of many of each other’s characters over the years. While not all the DC copies are in the MCU movie franchise, some are.
When it comes to Superman, three Marvel characters are often compared to the hero: Hyperion, Ikaris, and Sentry. The last two have made their way into the MCU, appearing in Eternals and Thunderbolts*, respectively. While one of Marvel’s Supermen is confirmed for the upcoming Avengers movies, the other will be back soon in a unique 2025 MCU series.
Marvel Zombies Is Bringing Back A Powerful MCU Character
Marvel Zombies continues the story and world crafted in the What If… Zombies?! episode of Marvel Studios’ What If…? season 1. The TV-MA series will be quite bloody, including moments like Spider-Man beheading many zombies at once with his webs, Blade chopping up a zombie Ghost with his sword, and more. Absent since his MCU debut, Ikaris appears in Marvel Zombies.
At this time, it has yet to be confirmed if Game of Thrones star Richard Madden will return to voice the character after his live-action MCU role in Eternals. In a recent teaser for the animated series shared by Marvel on X, Ikaris can be seen fighting a zombified Captain Marvel. Both characters have similar power levels, teasing a major battle.
In terms of whether Ikaris will be a zombie or not, that is still unclear. Previously, Marvel Zombies concept art revealed Ikaris with half of his body zombified and half normal. The new MCU footage does not make his condition clear. It stands to be seen if fighting the zombie Captain Marvel is what leads to Ikaris undergoing a transformation or not.
Could Ikaris Return To The MCU In Live-Action?
While one of Marvel’s versions of Superman, Ikaris, is going to be back in animated form when Marvel Zombies releases on Disney+ on September 24, the character could also make a live-action return. Sure, Ikaris killed himself by flying directly into the sun at the end of Eternals. However, the Marvel team is known for being constantly resurrected in the comics.
The MCU’s Eternals are effectively androids powered by incredible cosmic energy. Marvel could decide to use the World Forge to both resurrect Ikaris and the other deceased Eternals and restore their memories based on previous versions of the characters. The big question regarding Ikaris’ return is not “how,” but “where,” as the MCU seems to have moved past an Eternals sequel.
