The Toxic Avenger‘s digital release date has been revealed. Written and directed by Macon Blair, the dark superhero comedy film serves as a remake of 1984’s The Toxic Avenger. Starring Peter Dinklage as Winston, Kevin Bacon as Bob, Elijah Wood as Fritz, Jacob Tremblay as Wade, and Taylour Paige as J.J., the movie had a wider unrated domestic theatrical release on August 29.
Blair’s iteration was met with a positive reception. With an 86% critics’ score and an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the new movie was praised for being both funny and gory.
Now, The Toxic Avenger will come to digital EST/TVOD on September 30, with a physical release on October 28. The physical media offers several options, including DVD, Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, 4K + Blu-ray with a limited-edition lenticular O-Sleeve, Steelbook, and an Amazon exclusive 4K UHD + Blu-ray Collector’s Edition with the 1984 original film in 4K UHD format.
The Collector’s Edition SKUs consist of special features, including Blair’s director commentary, A Toxic Environment behind-the-scenes footage, Toxic Shock with Tiffany Shepis, and the 40th anniversary edition of the 1984 original.
What This Means For The Toxic Avenger
The Toxic Avenger should see a strong VOD reception, given its success so far. The Peter Dinklage reboot premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, but didn’t receive a theatrical release until 2025 after a long struggle to secure a distributor. The movie has made around $3 million at the worldwide box office so far, but the reception has been largely positive.
Revolving around a catastrophic toxic accident that transformed Dinklage’s Winston into Toxie, the movie follows the unlikely hero’s journey as he fights against corrupt forces and ruthless corporations to safeguard those he loves. ScreenRant‘s review for The Toxic Avenger highlights Blair’s execution that “leans into the absurd in the best possible way.”
Our Take On The Toxic Avenger’s Digital & Physical Release
The digital release will no doubt make the unrated movie more accessible for potential viewers who might not have gotten a chance to watch it in theaters. The physical release, on the other hand, highlights many perks that could be very appealing to the Toxic Avenger franchise’s die-hard fans. A Toxic Environment will further take fans behind the scenes to see the prosthetics and effects setup.
With The Toxic Avenger coming to digital platforms at the end of this month, it’s still unclear if or when the movie will be made available on a streaming platform, but its increased accessibility is no doubt great news.
