Superman’s Release Date On HBO Max Revealed By James Gunn (& It’s Very Soon)

James Gunn finally confirms when the DC Universe movie Superman will be released on HBO Max. The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate kicked off big time in 2025, as Krypton’s last son finally made his return to the big screen with David Corenswet portraying the iconic hero.

After years of it being in the works, the film served as a foundation point for DC Studios’ new superhero reboot, following the conclusion of the DCEU movie timeline in 2023. After the Superman movie’s ending, many have been wondering when Gunn’s installment will be available on streaming.

Following a post from Corenswet on Instagram, Gunn shared on X that Superman will officially be available to stream as of Friday, September 19, on HBO Max. At the time of writing, the DCU entry has grossed a total of $615 million at the worldwide box office, with $353.8 million coming from the domestic market $261.2 million from its international gross. The DC Studios film is the highest-grossing superhero movie of 2025, as it earned more than all of Marvel Studios’ theatrical releases this year.

Per Warner Bros., Superman‘s release on streaming will be accompanied by a Superman-themed takeover of the HBO Max app. A version of Superman with American Sign Language (ASL) will also stream exclusively on HBO Max starting this weekend.

While the movie is arriving on the streaming service on September 19, Superman will also be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD as of September 23, meaning the film will be out in every single medium. All the featurettes that are included are as follows:

With the 2025 entry’s upcoming HBO Max debut, Superman will have arrived on the platform 70 days after being in theaters. It’s also very likely that Gunn’s DC adventure will have a huge viewership there, especially among viewers who didn’t catch the movie on the big screen.

After the Superman post-credits scene, having the film finally arrive on the streaming platform will maintain the momentum for the DCU franchise, especially with Peacemaker season 2 also airing right now. Because there have also been theories about Corenswet showing up in the DC TV show, his film’s streaming timing is perfect.

With the Man of Tomorrow movie also officially in development, with filming set to begin in 2026, DC Studios is making sure the world knows that the iconic hero’s presence is not fading anytime soon. As Superman arrives on HBO Max this week, the 2025 success will now be able to be enjoyed worldwide at home.
