Bedazzled is topping streaming charts 25 years after its release. Directed by Harold Ramis, as a remake of the 1967 film of the same тιтle, the 2000 romantic comedy stars Brendan Fraser as a socially awkward man who makes a deal with the devil, trading his soul for seven wishes so he can win over the woman of his dreams.
In addition to Brendan Fraser in the lead role, the cast also includes Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil, alongside Frances O’Connor, Orlando Jones, Paul Adelstein, Toby Huss, Miriam Shor, Gabriel Cᴀsseus, three-time Emmy nominee Brian Doyle-Murray (Saturday Night Live), Jeff Doucette, Aaron Lustig, Rudolf Martin, and Julian Firth.
Now, 25 years after its release, Bedazzled ranks second on Hulu’s Top 10 movies in the United States for today, September 15, where it has been for the past six days, previously finishing first. It ranks below Andrew Santino: White Noise and above I Don’t Understand You, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Need for Speed, and World War Z.
It also ranks above John Wick: Chapter 4, Lost in the Jungle, Practical Magic, Kingsman: Secret Service, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Other Woman, The Devil Wears Prada, and Abducted in the Everglades.
What Bedazzled’s Streaming Success Means For The Movie
Bedazzled has largely slipped from public memory over the years, largely due to its mixed reviews from critics, who acknowledged that while it delivers a few laughs, the remake boils down to a single gag stretched too thin, resulting in plenty of dull patches. In his largely negative review, Roger Ebert wrote, “It is lacking in wickedness. It doesn’t smack its lips when it’s naughty.”
However, Bedazzled did reasonably well at the box office, making $90 million against its $48 million budget, and now it’s found surprising popularity on Hulu 25 years later, which can likely be attributed to nostalgia for Fraser’s comedic charm, Hurley’s campy performance as the Devil, and its overall quirky humor. Streaming offers forgotten films renewed visibility, allowing Bedazzled to be reappraised as light, escapist entertainment with retro appeal.
Our Take On Bedazzled’s Streaming Success
Brendan Fraser’s recent resurgence may also be fueling Bedazzled‘s streaming success. After years away from the spotlight, he experienced a remarkable comeback, winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for The Whale in 2023 and delivering a memorable performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Now, Fraser returns in Rental Family, a dramedy that is receiving rave reviews following its TIFF premiere. All of this could be renewing interest in his earlier comedic work, making Bedazzled a hidden gem for curious fans and nostalgic viewers alike.
