Josh Brolin’s 11% Rated Superhero Flop Finds Streaming Success

Jonah Hex has found streaming success years after its initial failure. Directed by Jimmy Hayward in his live-action debut, with a script written by Neveldine & Taylor based on DC Comics, the 2010 Western superhero movie stars Josh Brolin as the тιтular bounty hunter who is offered a clean slate in exchange for finding his longtime nemesis, Quentin Turnbull.

Its surprisingly star-studded cast also includes two-time Oscar nominees John Malkovich as Quentin Turnbull, Michael Fᴀssbender, and Michael Shannon, alongside Megan Fox, seven-time Emmy nominee Will Arnett, Wes Bentley, Aidan Quinn, the late Lance Reddick, John Gallagher, Jr., Tom Wopat, Julia Jones, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Brent Hinds.

Now, 15 years after its release, Jonah Hex ranks 10th on HBO Max’s Top 10 movies in the United States for today, September 15, where it has been for the past 10 days. It currently ranks below Warfare, Friendship, The Sitter, The Conjuring, Se7en, The Conjuring 2, Prometheus, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

What Jonah Hex’s Streaming Success Means For The Movie

Jonah Hex was a mᴀssive flop upon its release in 2010, both critically and commercially. It was widely panned by critics, earning a dismal 11% Rotten Tomatoes score, coupled with a meager 20% audience score. It made just $11 million at the box office against its $47 million budget, cementing its status as one of the decade’s worst superhero movies.

Despite Brolin’s commitment to the role, the movie’s short runtime and lack of focus are ultimately what doomed it. Though its initial release was disastrous, Jonah Hex has found a surprising second life on streaming 15 years later, likely drawing in audiences who are curious about its infamous status. Though its flaws remain glaring, audiences are seemingly giving it a second sH๏τ.

Our Take On Jonah Hex’s Streaming Success

Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex in a hat in Jonah Hex

Josh Brolin initially hated Jonah Hex‘s script, but eventually warmed up to its tongue-in-cheek style, and audiences seem to be experiencing a similar change of heart 15 years later. In 2010, superhero movies were judged much more harshly if they didn’t meet the standard set by early MCU movies and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight.

Today, audiences are perhaps much more willing to embrace Jonah Hex, and all its flaws, as a cult classic with campy humor. Additionally, audiences familiar with Brolin’s later success as Thanos could be curious about his earlier misfires. Overall, Jonah Hex offers a uniquely messy but entertaining snapsH๏τ of superhero cinema’s awkward adolescence.
