Matt Reeves Says The Batman 2 Will Do Something No Other Dark Knight Movie Or TV Show Has Done Before

The Batman Part II will take Bruce Wayne into a new chapter as the DC director teases the sequel’s unprecedented story. After years of waiting for the next big installment in his franchise, Robert Pattinson is getting ready to bring his take on the Dark Knight back to the big screen.

As The Batman universe will continue to stand as an Elseworlds property at DC Studios, while the DC Universe works on its version of the Caped Crusader, details remain very limited about Reeves’ 2027 installment, which is set to begin principal pH๏τography in 2026. However, with filming getting closer, things are ramping up behind the scenes.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves reflected on the first installment in his series and how he is looking to raise the bar for the sequel. As Pattinson has praised the script, Reeves also teased how the 2027 entry will take his iteration of the Gotham City hero in new directions that other movie and TV shows haven’t explored before:

Matt Reeves: Because of what the first movie was and what [The Batman: Part 2] is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery. That would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out.

You wanna keep the surprise so the fans can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised. He’s Batman, so if he [Robert Pattinson] doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for Bruce has never been done before in this way.

And I had a feeling he would respond in this way, the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging. And of course, I’m nervous every time anyone reads it because we put all this pᴀssion into it but you hope people connect to what you’re trying to do.

However, during a separate interview with MTV, the director was also asked if the sequel may feature the return of Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone, who was introduced in the franchise in HBO’s The Penguin season 1. Unfortunately, Sofia will not be making her big-screen debut just yet, as Reeves stated the following:

Cristin’s not in this one. But that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, so. But we’ll see. I mean, I think she’s incredible. What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what Lauren [LeFranc] did in creating that character – I mean, creating this version of the character – is so special. So, it’d be really exciting to do something with her. But, she’s not in this one, in full disclosure, just because we were so far along in the story that it was like, “Oh gee, we could,” it might upset the applecart, let’s say, given where the story goes, and what we were exploring. There are some things where it’s like, “Oh, we’d love to do this,” but actually, that doesn’t fit within where the story goes.

What Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 Updates Mean

With Reeves’ comments, it’s key to remember how the character of Batman has been reimaged several times in live-action, which is why it’s important to add fresh aspects from the comics that haven’t been used yet. The Batman‘s ending made it clear that there is a desire to not just repeat what past live-action takes have done before.

While The Penguin was one of the most welcome new comic book adaptations in recent years, Milioti not being part of The Batman 2 story and cast doesn’t mean she couldn’t show up in a future sequel. Based on how The Penguin season 1 ended, this franchise is definitely not done with her character just yet, and she will continue to be a part of how it develops the source material in new ways.

After hearing what Reeves is striving to do with his next film, the long wait for the movie’s release becomes more clearly worth it, especially with everything that was set up in the 2022 installment. As The Batman 2′s script has been completed and is being sent to the actors, things are moving in the right direction.

Given the secrecy surrounding the new film, there are bound to be big things in store for the audience who have been waiting patiently since 2022. Hopefully, as 2025 gets closer to its end, more details on The Batman Part II‘s most important arcs, as well as what new characters will join Reeves’ universe, will start to emerge.
