Recently, an alleged synopsis for Disney’s Frozen 3 started making the rounds. Following the events of Disney’s Frozen 2, the film is set to reunite the original cast including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad. It will be directed by Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the first two films with Tarzan director Chris Buck.
As revealed by the official DisneyChina WeChat profile, the plot of Frozen 3 may have received a significant update. Per a translation by @alamanaquedisney on X, the synopsis reads: “In this new chapter, witness the wedding of the century in Arendelle as Queen Anna walks down the aisle and joins Elsa on a new magical journey filled with unknown challenges. And what’s even more exciting: the royal family is about to welcome a mysterious new member!”
Interestingly, this news comes shortly after Gad disclosed that neither he nor the rest of the cast have begun recording their lines or have heard any songs. As such, Frozen 3 is still in production, which also means this synopsis, if credible, may not reflect the final version of the film.
What The Alleged Frozen 3 Synopsis Means
While the validity of this synopsis is in question, it could spell out interesting things for Anna and Elsa in Frozen 3. Anna and Kristoff’s relationship has been a major focus of all three films, as viewers watched it develop over time.
This is something of a rarity among Disney films, as they, at least in the classic and Renaissance eras, often ended with the primary lovebirds getting married. However, Tangled took a similar approach with Rapunzel and Eugene’s relationship developing throughout the movie and follow-up series, with a short that depicted their wedding set after. It’s not surprising that Frozen 3 may take a similar approach.
The bigger question posed by the reported synopsis is the arrival of a new family member. This could mean a few different things. Firstly, Elsa has created sentient snow creatures before, though it is unlikely this is the meaning.
Secondly, their grandfather’s villainous past was a focal point of Frozen 2, creating an entry point for a possible aunt, uncle, or cousin to be in a sequel. Thirdly and most likely, a relative from the opposite side of their family, their mother’s, could appear.
In addition to Elsa’s ice powers, the sisters’ mother, Queen Iduna, has a deep connection to nature, through being part of the Northuldra people, which allowed her to interact with the four elemental spirits of the forest. Continuing this storyline by introducing a relative on that side of the family could have major story potential, especially if it affects Elsa’s role as the fifth spirit and protector of the Enchanted Forest.
Our Take On The Alleged Frozen 3 Synopsis
Any speculation derived from this Frozen 3 synopsis needs to be taken with a grain of salt as it is not officially confirmed. That being said, the comedic potential of Anna and Kristoff’s wedding is undeniable, especially with Olaf around, while exploring her and Elsa’s family history further could expand the Frozen lore in interesting ways.
Disney executive Jared Bush previously called the work on the film so far “phenomenal,” adding: “When people see it, I think returning to that world with those characters, the entertainment value of watching them go on a new journey, but that feels very organic to the story they’ve already been on, is fantastic.“
Regardless of whether this synopsis is credible, Bush’s comments demonstrate Disney’s dedication to continuing Anna and Elsa’s story in an impactful way. Come 2027, Frozen 3 is sure to be an exciting chapter in the sisters’ shared journey.
