The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s announcement is exciting news, but it may be a disappointing sign for 2 fan-favorite Nintendo characters. During September 12’s Nintendo Direct, the company announced the new тιтle for the upcoming sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. A sequel to the film was inevitable after breaking box office records, grossing $1.3 billion worldwide.
The last film included a few teases that suggested the franchise could be headed to space. Princess Peach mentions other galaxies, an adorable, yet morbid, blue Luma has a small, humorous role, and the Gusty Garden music is included in the film’s end credits. However, nothing had indicated that Galaxy was the next film until today’s announcement.
It also means that speculation will build up regarding what characters will be added. Yoshi was essentially confirmed by the first film’s post-credit scene, and the new тιтle likely means Rosalina will also be joining the cast. However, the sequel’s new тιтle does suggest disappointment for those who wanted to see Mario and Luigi’s villainous counterparts in the next film.
Wario And Waluigi Are Not In The Super Mario Galaxy Games
For long-time Mario players, the Super Mario Galaxy games are some of the most beloved games in the series. In the games, Mario embarks on an extraterrestrial mission to save Princess Peach after she’s once again captured by Bowser. Mario is helped by Rosalina, a Guardian of the cosmos, and her Luma friends.
While there are plenty of other classic Mario characters in the Super Mario Galaxy games, like Yoshi, Luigi, and Toad, Wario and Waluigi are not in either game. Traditionally, these two characters are not included in mainline Mario games. They are quirky antagonists who are typically featured in Mario Party games, or sports games like Mario Kart and Mario Tennis.
However, Wario has found success in solo games. The WarioWare games are filled with hilarious mini-games that are addicting and often demonstrate the best features of a Nintendo console. However, Waluigi has often gotten the short end of the stick. He’s only featured as an ᴀssist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. and still hasn’t received his own game.
Wario and Waluigi are characters that players want to see in these movies. Many have already suggested Danny DeVito as a potential casting for Wario, which does sound perfect. While they aren’t in the Galaxy games, they still could appear in the sequel. The last film combined other Mario games, like Mario Kart, so these two villains may surface.
In the announcement, Nintendo only confirmed five characters for the sequel: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Kamek. There is room for more characters, and Bowser may want to team up with Mario and Luigi’s opposites after his humiliating defeat. There’s still plenty of time before this sequel releases in 2026, and Super Mario Galaxy creates a universe of possibilities.
