Matt Damon is set to lead what is certainly going to be one of the biggest movies in theaters in 2026 with Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey. As movie fans wait to watch the IMAX adventure, viewers around the globe are streaming a classic Damon movie on Netflix.
Ever since Damon broke out in the 1990s, he’s been one of the world’s biggest movie stars, dabbling in various genres. That includes action movies like the Bourne franchise, sci-fi hits such as Interstellar, and comedy capers in the form of Ocean’s Eleven and its sequels. It’s his dramatic work that Netflix subscribers are watching in droves right now, though.
Recently, Good Will Hunting landed in Netflix’s global top 10 movies last week, from September 1 to 7. Damon stars as a troubled young man with a genius IQ who is counseled by Robin Williams’ caring therapist (an Oscar-winning performance from Williams). Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård, Minnie Driver, Casey Affleck, and Cole Hauser co-star. Damon and Affleck wrote the Oscar-winning original screenplay.
Good Will Hunting Just Cracks The Top 10 On Netflix’s Charts
Good Will Hunting earned the tenth spot on the global streaming chart. Joining it were Netflix’s Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, record-setting KPop Demon Hunters, murder mystery The Thursday Murder Club, and Taylor Sheridan’s western thriller Wind River. Perhaps what is most impressive, though, is that Good Will Hunting made the Netflix top 10 without streaming in the US.
The Gus Van Sant-directed movie made the top 10 most-watched movies in 24 countries last week, including Argentina, Chile, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, and more. Good Will Hunting, along with The Woman King and Paw Patrol: The Movie, were the only three movies last week to make the Netflix global top 10 cut that weren’t streaming in the US.
Our Take On Good Will Hunting’s Netflix Success
As Good Will Hunting approaches its 30th anniversary, it’s fun to not only see the movie have a bit of a renaissance on Netflix, but also in many non-English-speaking countries.
You often hear that action and horror movies do great overseas, as there’s less of a language barrier to understand all that’s going on. Well, aside from a fight scene early in the movie, Good Will Hunting is not that.
The fact that the movie is able to work for these Netflix subscribers across the world almost 30 years later speaks to the quality of Damon and Affleck’s writing, as well as the fantastic performances from the entire cast.
