Sydney Sweeney Transforms Into Boxing Icon In Powerful Christy Movie Trailer

The first trailer has been revealed for Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney of Euphoria and Anyone But You fame. Christy is an intense new sports biopic following the career of Christy Martin, the most successful female boxer of the 1990s, elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.

The trailer for Christy, accompanied by the soundtrack choice of Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen,” showcases Martin being initially delighted to stumble into a pᴀssion for boxing. However, as she climbs the ranks to become one of the best in the world, her relationship with her trainer and manager (and husband) turns abusive, while her family provides little help.

Christy is directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes, based on a story by Katherine Fugate. The movie also stars Katy O’Brian, Merritt Wever, Ben Foster, and Chad L. Coleman. Christy is set to be released theatrically on November 7; check out the trailer below:

Alongside the trailer, producer and distributor Black Bear Pictures also revealed a theatrical poster that emphasizes Sweeney’s star power as a driving force of the movie. Check out the poster below:

With its world premiere happening on September 5 at the Toronto International Film Festival, this week saw Christy‘s debut on Rotten Tomatoes with a solid score of 70%, though this has since dropped to 63%, now having aggregated a total of 32 reviews.

ScreenRant‘s Rachel Labonte reviewed Christy and called it “unbalanced,” at times playing like a by-the-book sports biopic and at others possibly focusing on the wrong elements of Martin’s life, though Sweeney gives an admirable performance. Other films have seen much stronger debuts on this year’s festival circuit, and Christy appears to be out of the running as a serious awards contender.

As Christy gears up for its theatrical release, the question remains of what kind of impact it will have outside the most prestigious industry awards. Eden‘s disappointing box office proves that Sweeney’s name alone is not enough to draw in audiences (and this movie was bolstered by several more mᴀssive names).

Regardless, Sweeney is becoming one of the most prolific stars in the industry, with Americana, Eden, and Christy all coming out this year (seeing debatable success). Much like ScreenRant‘s Graeme Guttman says in The Smashing Machine‘s review, the movie may fail, but these are potentially milestone performances in Sweeney and Dwayne Johnson’s careers.

Our Take On Christy’s Trailer

This trailer advertises a strenuous but ultimately uplifting sports biopic, and that, in addition to Sweeney starring, may be appealing enough to audiences and turn Christy into a box office hit. Given the underwhelming reception to her other movies from this year, Sweeney could use a win with audiences, even if this won’t take her to new heights of critical acclaim.
