Trailer For Matt Damon & Ben Affleck’s New Netflix Movie Tests Their Friendship

The official trailer for The Rip has arrived. The upcoming Netflix action thriller movie, which premieres on January 16, 2026, was directed by The Grey‘s Joe Carnahan. It boasts a robust ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Sasha Calle, NĂ©stor Carbonell, and Scott Adkins.

It marks the first Ben Affleck and Matt Damon collaboration in which the two friends and frequent co-stars have both appeared onscreen since 2023’s Air. However, they have co-produced a number of movies in the interim, including Small Things Like These, The Instigators, The Accountant 2, and the upcoming Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Netflix has now unveiled the official trailer for The Rip. It opens on what seems to be a typical drug bust by the Miami police department, but it turns out the team that the characters are on mostly handles cash seizures, and their dog tracks the smell of money.

When a tip-off for a $300,000 haul turns out to lead them to a stash of $20 million, Damon’s character, Lieutenant Dane Dumars, jokes that “it would be so much easier if we just stole this money,” which seems to give Affleck’s character, Det. Sergeant JD Byrne, an idea.

However, the longer they spend in the house, the more things spin out of control. The remainder of the trailer shows scenes of the growing distrust between the cops, as well as new characters who arrive to make things even more complicated, including a mysterious, threatening voice on the phone. Check out the trailer below:

What This Means For The Rip

While Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are known for being offscreen friends, they do not always portray friendly characters onscreen. This was notably the case in 2021’s The Last Duel, a Ridley Scott movie that was set in medieval France and followed a tangled web of shifting allegiances, deceit, violence, and betrayal.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s most notable early collaboration was 1997’s Good Will Hunting, which they co-wrote and in which they play onscreen friends.

However, The Rip promises to provide the two actors with their most complicated co-star roles yet. The trailer promises that the very nature of the characters’ relationship will be called into question when the movie throws them into an emotionally charged situation that will likely not end well, considering the fact that it involves millions of dollars and loaded guns.

Overall, this trailer promises that The Rip will be an overwhelming experience that keeps ratcheting up the tension. If it lives up to this promise, it could ultimately mark itself as one of the best movies of the decade for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, whose other 2020s collaborations include 2023’s Air and 2024’s Unstoppable.
