The next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, just became even more exciting after recent comments from Sigourney Weaver. Star Wars will always be a film franchise more than anything else, which means it really is about time that beloved galaxy returned to the big screen.
Two upcoming Star Wars movies are now in the works; production has long since wrapped on next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will star Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin. The trailer has yet to be released online (although lucky attendees at some conventions have seen it). But recent comments from Sigourney Weaver just made this movie even more exciting…
Sigourney Weaver Just Hinted At A Darker Story In The Mandalorian And Grogu
The Mandalorian and Grogu features the Star Wars debut of Sigourney Weaver as a Republic captain giving Din Djarin orders. Speaking to Collider, Weaver subtly hinted that this will be more than just “a fun time at the movies.” While The Mandalorian and Grogu may be stylistically very different to Andor, she seems to be hinting there’ll be some serious themes here.
Here’s Collider‘s full account:
[Collider’s Steve] Weintraub further highlighted the differences between a show like Andor and a film like The Mandalorian and Grogu, saying the former is ‘dealing with ᴅᴇᴀᴅly serious stuff’ and the latter is ‘a fun time at the movies.’ She wasn’t so quick to agree, closing out by saying, ‘Well, let’s see, shall we? I’m sure it will be at least that. And it will have Pedro Pascal.’
The trailer seen at events like Star Wars Celebration has seemed to hint The Mandalorian and Grogu will deliberately evoke memories of The Empire Strikes Back; we have a snow planet and the return of AT-ATs (Star Wars built a life-size AT-AT for the movie). Is it possible Star Wars‘ next movie also features a major twist?
What Dark Twists Are In Store For Din Djarin?
This may well help explain why Lucasfilm is holding back on marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu. It’s directed by Jon Favreau, who has developed a penchant for secrecy with previous seasons of The Mandalorian; he managed to hold Grogu back as a surprise ahead of the premiere, and Luke Skywalker’s season 2 cameo was another secret.
Sigourney Weaver’s conversation with Collider seems to suggest she thinks there are some surprises in store for viewers. It’s entirely possible Favreau is following the same pattern, deliberately concealing a major twist that will transform the bounty hunter’s story – and potentially set up further sequels.
In truth, the possibility shouldn’t really be seen as much of a surprise. Favreau gave us the introduction of Grogu and a Luke Skywalker cameo in The Mandalorian TV show, and he will need to up the ante – and the spectacle – if he’s going to justify the move to the big screen.
Weaver’s comments seem to hint The Mandalorian and Grogu may deliver on that.
