While promoting his new movie Frankenstein, Oscar Isaac addressed the possibility of a reunion with his Drive (2011) co-star Ryan Gosling, were he to return to the Star Wars franchise. Gosling is set to lead the new installment, Star Wars: Starfighter, while one of Isaac’s biggest roles is that of Poe Dameron throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival, Isaac generally expressed positive interest in returning to Star Wars, with Starfighter being the main point of discussion. ET asked: “We want to see you back, reunited with Ryan Gosling. Will that happen anytime soon for Star Wars?” Isaac responded with comments such as “Star Wars, right! We’ll see, I mean yeah!” and “I’m ready for it. You let me know when.“

Star Wars: Starfighter‘s release date is confirmed to be May 28, 2027, the second slated Star Wars movie following the sequel trilogy’s conclusion in 2019, after 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu. Starfighter is being directed by Shawn Levy and is also confirmed to star Matt Smith, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Mia Goth, Simon Bird, and Daniel Ings.

Starfighter is confirmed to take place five years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, and is being pitched as a standalone story focusing on an entirely new set of characters. Thus, Issac’s return might not fit into this movie, as it was seemingly imagined as disparate from the Skywalker Saga. However, his interest spells a potential reunion down the line.

Oscar Isaac and Ryan Gosling are two huge stars in Hollywood who have worked together before, and bringing them together could prove to be lucrative for Star Wars. However, with Starfighter‘s cast seemingly set as it begins production, Isaac returning to Star Wars and potentially sharing the screen with Gosling is an idea that may have to be shelved for a later date.

Our Take On Oscar Isaac’s Potential Star Wars Return

Additionally, Star Wars desperately needs fresh stories that aren’t too attached to the overdone Skywalker Saga, and Starfighter is the most exciting Star Wars movie in years precisely because it purports to be this, bringing in a new cast of promising A-listers and up-and-comers. Thus, Isaac’s appearance in this movie would possibly ruin it.

Despite the delays with the proposed New Jedi Order movie centered around Daisy Ridley’s Rey, eventually bringing back the cast of the sequel trilogy could be a good thing, allowing them a chance at a better story following the Rise of Skywalker‘s disappointing reception. The final member of Ridley and Isaac’s trio, John Boyega is also open to returning to Star Wars.

While Isaac someday playing Poe again is certainly possible, I believe it’s not going to be in Star Wars: Starfighter. If it were to happen, Gosling would have to join the more direct sequel to the sequel trilogy, likely still several years in the future.
