Chris Evans & Anya Taylor-Joy’s New Action Movie Debuts With Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score

Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy are known for many roles, but are perhaps best known for their action roles. On one hand, Evans is best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, spanning nearly a decade. Before that, he played another Marvel Comics character, the Human Torch, in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Evans has starred in additional comic book adaptations, such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) and Snowpiercer (2013). Beyond his comic book persona, Evans has continued to expand his action portfolio with high-profile projects, including The Gray Man (2022) and Red One (2024). On the other hand, Anya Taylor-Joy has also emerged as a rising force in action cinema.

Taylor-Joy is perhaps best known for her leading role in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), and has starred in additional action films such as The Northman (2022) and The Gorge (2025). Now, Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy have teamed up for a new action movie, which, unfortunately, has premiered to disappointing reviews.

Sacrifice Debuts With Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score

Sacrifice has debuted with an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by Romain Gavras, who co-wrote the script with Will Arbery, the action film stars Chris Evans as a movie star trying to revive his career, who is kidnapped by a fanatic (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) who believes that sacrificing him will save the world from a fiery apocalypse.

Led by Evans and Taylor-Joy, the film features an ensemble cast that also includes Oscar nominee Salma Hayek (Frida), Vincent Cᴀssel, Ambika Mod, Emmy winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lᴀsso), two-time Oscar nominee John Malkovich (Places in the Heart, In the Line of Fire), Charli XCX, Yung Lean, Jade Croot, Jeremy O. Harris, and Miriam Silverman.

Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, Sacrifice has debuted with a 27% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie only has 15 reviews at the time of writing, so its score should fluctuate as more are published. The movie doesn’t yet have a theatrical release date, so it’s unknown when it will have an audience score.

What Sacrifice’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

SACRIFICE_Still_HERO

The movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score means that its reviews are overwhelmingly negative. For instance, in ScreenRant‘s Sacrifice review, Mae Abdulbaki writes, “Chris Evans is a very messy hero in this weird and chaotic satire that struggles with its plot… It makes some sense in its own bizarre way, but it’s also reaching in its efforts to say something meaningful.”

Otherwise, critics are calling it an ambitious albeit unfocused satire that collapses under weak writing, underdeveloped characters, and diluted social commentary. While a few reviews praise its bold scope and thematic bite, the majority find Sacrifice to be shallow, uneven, and ultimately unable to deliver the incisive, impactful critique it aims for.
