Five great movies are waiting to be streamed for free on Tubi this week. The streaming service, known for its mᴀssive library of free-to-watch movies and shows, is constantly updating its lineup, adding new properties every month. Its range is incredibly impressive, as there are films across a mulтιтude of genres, from Westerns, to romantic fantasy movies, to 1980s horror gems.
As usual, this week’s recommendations pull from the various genres in Tubi’s lineup. And some are so good that it’s actually surprising to see them available to watch for free, such as an all-time great film noir with Orson Welles. Other films worth checking out this week include an underrated Jet Li movie, a Kurt Russell Western, an Eddie Murphy comedy, and a 1980s sci-fi gem.
Bodyguard From Beijing
An unofficial remake of the Kevin Costner-Whitney Houston romance film from 1992, The Bodyguard, received a superior remake from an unexpected source: two years later, Jet Li starred in Bodyguard from Beijing. The 1994 movie takes the love story of the critically maligned Costner film and essentially fixes it by making it more of an action-oriented movie.
This approach detracts a bit from the predictable nature of the movie’s romantic plot by giving the audience a different reason to stay engaged. However, Bodyguard from Beijing doesn’t go as far as to fill the film with action; the fight scenes are spread out, allowing for some sense of suspense.
Like the original, Bodyguard from Beijing sees a detached, business-first bodyguard develop a will-they-won’t-they dynamic with the woman he’s been tasked with protecting, who is initially opposed to his seemingly overprotective and controlling presence in her life.
Jet Li’s martial arts expertise creates the framework for several exciting action sequences as he works to keep his charge safe. It’s not as famous as some of Jet Li’s other movies, yet he’s still in top form here, coming across as an almost-superhuman one-man army in his fights with the hired thugs in Bodyguard from Beijing.
Coming To America
Tubi offers a slew of movies from the filmography of Eddie Murphy, including Coming to America. A 1988 comedy classic that received a Prime Video original sequel just four years ago, Coming to America has a reputation as one of Eddie Murphy’s best movies, and for good reason.
The romantic comedy creates one of Eddie Murphy’s most entertaining characters in the form of Prince Akeem, a member of the royal family of a fictional African country called Zamunda. Prince Akeem’s naïveté when it comes to American culture lends itself to the laughs in the movie, as do the other characters that Murphy portrays in the film.
Romance is also key to Coming to America’s story. The main storyline follows Prince Akeem as he tries to win the heart of an American woman, all the while hiding his idenтιтy. Naturally, this comes with some funny dilemmas for his character.
The Third Man
Arguably one of the greatest film noir movies of all time, The Third Man is a 1949 British movie that stars Joseph Cotten as an American writer who goes to London to look for an old friend from his youth, who supposedly died in an accident. The story sees him get wrapped in a potential romance with his friend’s girlfriend while trying to get to the bottom of what happened.
The Third Man’s story includes several twists and turns, many of which relate to the mysterious character played by Orson Welles in the movie. But while Orson Welles is front-and-center of most promotional material for the film, its best performance is from its star, Joseph Cotten, who creates an unlikely, principled hero who’s easy to root for as he tries to win over Alida Valli’s character and find his friend.
As a film noir, The Third Man is naturally steeped in morally gray elements one may not expect from this era. This sets up a perfect ending that defies the expectations of the standard Hollywood love story, and delivers a quiet, but powerful and symbolic conclusion to the two main characters’ stories.
Bone Tomahawk
Tombstone may be the most popular Western featuring Kurt Russell, but the actor has one entry in the genre that may be even better. In 2015, Russell starred in Bone Tomahawk as the sheriff of a town in the American Wild West dealing with a cannibalistic cult.
Bone Tomahawk is very much a genre-bending Western, in that it leans heavily on horror elements, especially in regards to its unsettling and frightful depiction of the hideous cannibals, referred to in the film as “troglodytes.”
It’s 91% Rotten Tomatoes score goes to show that combining the Western and horror genres worked out well for the Kurt Russell thriller, which is streaming on Tubi. In fact, an argument can be made that Bone Tomahawk is one of the greatest Westerns of the 21st century, if not the best of them all.
RoboCop
Also available on Tubi is RoboCop, a cult classic from the 1980s that features of the decade’s greatest action heroes. A fun mix of science fiction and superhero action, RoboCop transforms Peter Weller’s Alex Murphy into a powerful, crime-fighting cyborg who goes on a relentless crusade against gangs in Detroit and the corrupt corporation that controls them.
RoboCop is essentially a superhero film, albeit one with a dark twist. After all, its hero isn’t afraid to use questionable measures – including torture – to advance his goals in the film. In this way, RoboCop differs greatly from the traditional superhero movie experience.
Adding to the reasons to check out RoboCop on Tubi is the streamer’s inclusion of the other installments in the franchise. After watching Peter Weller’s cybernetic hero clean up the streets of Detroit in the 1987 movie, you can move straight into RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, with Weller reprising his role in the second movie before being replaced by Robert Burke.
They don’t pick up after the events of the sequels, but if watching the RoboCop trilogy inspires more interest in the character’s adventures, Tubi also offers the live-action RoboCop TV show from 1994 and the 2014 reboot with Joel Kinnaman.
