Frozen 3 gets a disappointing update from Olaf’s iconic voice actor. In 2013, the first Frozen movie took the world by storm. However, the wait for a sequel went on for six years before Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) returned to the big screen in 2019. Now, another six years have gone by, but not without development.
The long-awaited threequel was confirmed by Disney in 2023. Originally scheduled for release in 2026, the date was then pushed to November 24, 2027, making the expected wait between the second and third installments eight years. Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the first two movies with Chris Buck, has signed on to direct both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4.
While talking to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his new film Adulthood, Josh Gad shared an update on Frozen 3. Gad revealed that he has had a “preview of what the movie is,” but he hasn’t received anything on the songs or started recording. However, he teased that the upcoming sequel would be “worth the wait.” Read Gad’s full comments below:
We have not started recording. We have not heard songs yet. I was lucky enough to get sort of a preview of what the movie is, and it’s going to be worth the wait. It’s pretty extraordinary what they’re doing. Pretty extraordinary.
For me, my whole thing was don’t do a sequel unless there’s a reason to do a sequel. If you have a story worth telling, then call us up and let’s do it. To Jennifer Lee’s credit, she really took that note and gave herself that note and has created something that’s going to be worth the wait.
What Josh Gad’s Update Means For Frozen 3
Gad’s comments indicate that Frozen 3 is still in development. Recently, Disney executive Jared Bush also offered an update on Frozen 3‘s script and songs. While some are “under wraps,” the creative officer stressed that the work being done behind the scenes is “phenomenal,” and the return to Arendelle will feel “very organic.”
In the July report, Bush teased that he had an idea of what the songs would be, but the details are still to be sorted out. Gad’s update mirrors the overall sentiment shared by Bush, hinting that the songs are still being worked on. However, Frozen 3 already has a fantastic story for Elsa and Anna to return.
Our Take On Josh Gad’s Update On Frozen 3
Frozen 3‘s delay will likely be well justified. Not only does it give the creatives time to make another worthwhile installment, but it could potentially benefit from the late November release date. In 2019, Frozen 2 opened a week before Thanksgiving and set a record for a Thanksgiving weekend at the box office, grossing approximately $124 million over a five-day holiday period.
The movie totaled over $1 billion at the global box office and became one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. A similar release window for the third entry and plenty of time for the film to develop give it the best sH๏τ. While there is no solid news about the upcoming sequel at this time, it sounds like Frozen 3 is on track to offer audiences a well-earned return.
