Stephen King‘s Top 10 movies of all time have been revealed. King is a prolific author who is best known for his works in the horror genre, including Carrie, Cujo, It, The Shining, Salem’s Lot, Gerald’s Game, Christine, and many more. Dozens of Stephen King books have been adapted into movies, many of which have also become minted classics.
On his official X account, Stephen King shared a list of his Top 10 favorite movies of all time. He specifically excluded four movies that were adapted from his own work, namely Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Stand by Me.
The movies that he chose, which are not ranked, are 1977’s Sorcerer, 1974’s The Godfather Part II, 1972’s The Getaway, 1993’s Groundhog Day, 1942’s Casablanca, 1948’s The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, 1975’s Jaws, 1973’s Mean Streets, 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and 1944’s Double Indemnity. The decade that is most represented on the list is the 1970s, with six тιтles, while the genre that is most represented is thriller. Additionally, Steven Spielberg is the only director with more than one тιтle on Stephen King’s list.
Another notable thing about the list is that it includes a mix of genres, including comedy and science fiction, but it contains only one тιтle that can generally be considered to be a horror movie: Spielberg’s giant shark classic Jaws.
What This Means For Stephen King
This list offers a great deal of insight into Stephen King’s taste. While the author has praised a great many contemporary horror films on his X account, including Zach Cregger’s Weapons, Michael Shanks’ Together, and Sébastien Vaniček’s Infested, this list reveals that classics still have a hold on his heart when it comes to all-time favorites.
The newest movie on Stephen King’s list, Groundhog Day, celebrated its 32nd anniversary in February.
More importantly, his tastes seem to lean more toward thrillers than horror movies, which offers some insight into how he approaches the horror genre in his own writing. Even though his works often contain extreme gore and supernatural elements, they also boast solid thriller storytelling, a dual genre approach that has likely enhanced the popularity and longevity of his work.
Our Take On Stephen King’s Top 10 List
One of the most intriguing things about this list are the honorable mentions. While Stephen King does not hide when he dislikes an adaptation of his work (as was famously the case with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining), he usually has something nice to say about the majority of his adaptations, so him sharing his favorites is revealing.
The fact that Stephen King singled out three of his dramas and only one of his horror movies (Misery) underscores the fact that his personal interests are much more varied than the genre that has occupied him for the majority of his writing career.
