Warner Bros. Extends Historical Box Office Record After The Conjuring: Last Rites Release

Warner Bros. has extended its historic box office record following the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites. Premiering on September 5, The Conjuring: Last Rites marks the ninth installment in the Conjuring universe and is helmed once again by director Michael Chaves. The film follows Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as they confront the Smurl haunting.

Despite mixed reviews, with the 2025 movie earning a 56% Tomatometer, The Conjuring: Last Rites has captivated audiences, opening to $83 million domestically, and has grossed $187 million at the box office worldwide. The current box office has broken records for the highest opening weekend in the Conjuring franchise, as well as extending Warner Bros.’ all-time record.

According to the figures, with the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites, Warner Bros. has become the first film studio ever to release seven films debuting with over $40 million back-to-back at the domestic box office. This streak started with A Minecraft Movie in April 2025, which debuted with $162 million domestically. Check out the full list below:

What This Box Office Record Means For Warner Bros.

This seven-movie streak underscores a shift in Warner Bros.’ strategy by diversifying with bold тιтles that resonate. Warner Bros.’ ability to consistently achieve over $40 million domestically — especially with the more impressively mᴀssive debuts of A Minecraft Movie and Superman demonstrates savvy marketing, well-timed releases, and the studio’s restored box office results after a few years of commercial flops.

However, this streak doesn’t just reflect quality; it also shows range. From video-game adaptations to original horror, DC superheroes to high-octane racing, Warner Bros. is successfully balancing license-based and original content, leveraging both nostalgia and novelty. Therefore, in diversifying their portfolio, the studio has continued to see success at the domestic box office, even with The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Evidently, this milestone is no fluke, and it signals that the powerhouse studio has found its stride again. By appealing to franchise fans with movies like Minecraft, Superman, and The Conjuring, while also offering fresh original stories with Sinners, as well as plenty of cinematic spectacle with F1, Warner Bros. has covered all of its bases, allowing for consistent commercial success.

So far, Warner Bros. seems to have mastered the art of satisfying audiences, delivering box-office gold. That being said, as we head into fall, with тιтles like Black Phone 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 lined up after The Conjuring: First Rites, Warner Bros. will need to continue adjusting its strategy to maintain audience engagement if it hopes to keep this box office streak going.
