Ryan Reynolds reveals the iconic ’80s movie that inspired a brutal ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine scene. Released on July 26, 2024, the Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led Marvel outing saw two unlikely antiheroes on a trip through the multiverse to save ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s world.
The Shawn Levy movie grossed over $1 billion at the box office and became one of the only two movies in 2024 that hit the benchmark. As the MCU’s first R-rated movie, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine broke a record and surpᴀssed Joker to claim the No.1 spot as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, a record that remains unbroken.
However, despite being a smash hit for Marvel, the studio doesn’t have any immediate plans for a sequel. While Reynolds has teased the possibility, he also admitted that pulling off a project like ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine required mᴀssive time and effort.
Planes, Trains And Automobiles Inspired ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s Van Scene
Released in 1987, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles stars John Candy as Del Griffith and Steve Martin as Neal Page, who become traveling companions to make it home in time for Thanksgiving. Facing tough weather and other challenges, the two with opposite personalities have to work together to reach their intended destination.
While speaking with Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, Reynolds revealed that the iconic ’80s comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles hugely influenced Wolverine & Wolverine. The brutal van scene, where Wade Wilson and Wolverine fight each other relentlessly, runs parallel with “Neal Page ripping Del Griffith apart in the motel room.” Read the actor’s comments below:
If you put the two movies together, you’ll go “Oh…my god.” Like the beats are the same, they move the same, there’s even a scene in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine where he rips me a new one in the van, in the Honda Odyssey, he has more lines in that scene than he’s ever had in a movie featuring Wolverine, and it is the same as Neal Page ripping Del Griffith apart in the motel room.
What This Means For ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine
Del is talkative, and Neal is a control freak. In the case of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Wolverine, it seems that Wade is more Del, and Wolverine is more Neal. Additionally, the trope of two unlikely heroes embarking on a journey together can be found in several successful movies and all-time classics, including Up, Shrek, and 21 Jump Street.
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine is Reynolds’ take on the concept. While on-screen, Jackman and Reynolds made it look effortless, but Reynolds stressed that kind of road trip movie was particularly hard to make. In the same interview, the Free Guy star revealed that his 2024 movie was “detailed beyond measure” and he had to make sure things were exactly right in every single frame.
Previously, Reynolds has talked about why he isn’t jumping into making a fourth ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movie, and the challenge of making ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine is a huge factor, in addition to the star’s commitment to his family.
