DCU Batman Spinoff Finally Gets New Writing Status After Months Of Silence

DC Studios’ Robin spinoff, Dynamic Duo, has gotten a major writing update. Dynamic Duo will focus on DC Comics characters Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both of whom have been under the Robin mask in the past. The animated film will be directed by Arthur Mintz and produced through his studio, Swaybox. The film will feature a combination of miniatures, models, puppetry, animatronics, and CGI.

Dynamic Duo was originally penned by Coco‘s Matthew Aldrich. Now, Per AV Club, DC Studios has brought in 500 Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber for a major script rewrite.

The film is said to exist outside Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise and potentially the upcoming DCU continuity. The story will follow the unlikely partnership between Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as they both take on the Robin mantle at the same time. In the comics, Dick was the first Robin before eventually pᴀssing the torch to Jason in the 1980s.

Matt Reeves will produce through his 6th & Idaho banner. Theresa Andersson and James Gunn will produce with DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, with Michael Uslan serving as executive producer. Dynamic Duo is slated for a June 30, 2028, release.

What This Means For Dynamic Duo

The addition of Neustadter and Weber suggests that Dynamic Duo may offer more than just visual novelty; it may also deliver emotional depth and witty resonance. Their strengths in character-driven storytelling match well with the well-known Robin mythology, which often centers on his idenтιтy, legacy, and sibling-like mentorship.

The rewrite could lean into the friction between Dick, the original Robin, and Jason, his successor, making for a dynamic ripe for both drama and dark humor. With Mintz’s visual creativity and this emotional lens, Dynamic Duo might become a standout among DC’s upcoming releases.

The fact that the film will most likely exist outside the current DCU continuity also frees it tonally. Dynamic Duo doesn’t have to adhere to broader universe constraints, meaning the script can explore more intimate themes while still using superhero iconography.

Dynamic Duo has the chance to deliver a smaller-scale, deeply felt character study wrapped in superhero wings and become one of DC’s most thoughtful and memorable projects yet.

The rewrite could redefine how Robins have been portrayed on screen, this time making them less sidekicks than more complex protagonists. Given the writing duo’s track record, which also includes Daisy Jones & The Six and The Disaster Artist, audiences can expect a film with equal parts edge, longing, and occasional laughs.

DC Studios is leaning heavily into creative ambition here. Dynamic Duo has the potential to become a cult favorite by merging unconventional visuals with emotionally charged storytelling. With Neustadter and Weber at the helm of the rewrite, the project gains legitimacy as a meaningful exploration of legacy and friendship.

The film’s blend of puppetry-style animation and authentic emotional tone may deliver something both weirdly charming and unmistakably human. In a world where superhero storylines are often overplayed, Dynamic Duo has the chance to deliver a smaller-scale, deeply felt character study wrapped in superhero wings and become one of DC’s most thoughtful and memorable projects yet.
