Sydney Sweeney’s New Oscar-Buzzing Biopic Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

The new sports biopic starring Sydney Sweeney is doing well on Rotten Tomatoes. Sweeney is a 27-year-old actor who had her breakthrough on the small screen, rising to prominence by starring in HBO series including the teen drama Euphoria and the murder mystery anthology The White Lotus.

However, there have also been a number of notable Sydney Sweeney movies. The star has taken lead roles in тιтles from a wide variety of genres, including the smash hit romantic comedy Anyone But You, the controversial religious horror movie Immaculate, Quentin Tarantino’s historical dramedy Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and her new sports biopic.

Christy Has Won Over Critics

Sydney Sweeney’s upcoming project Christy has arrived on Rotten Tomatoes. She stars in the sports biopic movie as the тιтle character, Christy Martin, who is a professional boxer and inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. It was directed and co-written by David Michôd (War Machine).

Black Bear Pictures is distributing Christy in domestic theaters on November 7.

The ensemble cast of Christy also includes Katy O’Brian (The Mandalorian), Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Merritt Wever (Severance), Jess Gabor (School Spirits), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones), Chad L. Coleman (The Wire), and Ethan Embry (Sweet Home Alabama, the upcoming Scream 7).

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated 10 different critics’ reviews for the movie after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, which is enough for it to earn an official score on the Tomatometer. Although this score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, Christy has earned a solidly Fresh 70%.

While three critics have given Christy outright negative reviews, the movie’s other reviews are demonstrably positive. It has earned near-perfect scores from certain individual critics, including 4 out of 5 and 9 out of 10, with reviews particularly praising Sweeney’s transformative performance.

What This Means For Sydney Sweeney

If Christy can maintain this level of positivity as new reviews come in at the time of its domestic debut, it will cement the ninth Fresh score ever earned by a Sydney Sweeney movie. This will be a boon after string of poorly-rated тιтles in the 2020s, including the Marvel flop Madame Web (10%) and the survival thriller Eden (57%).

Considering the fact that even the majority of the negative reviews praise Sydney Sweeney, this also adds merit to the fact that significant Oscar buzz is now surrounding the actor after Christy‘s premiere. Although the Best Actress category is compeтιтive, with potential nominees including Cynthia Erivo for Wicked: For Good and Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, Sweeney now has solid momentum.
